Defroster drain leaks into the main compartment

Every couple of days I have a frozen pool on the bottom of my freezer. It started a year or so ago. The defroster heater melts the ice and it leaks onto my floor.

The drain hole is plugged. Probably with ice now. Needs to be fully defrosted with a heat gun or hairdryer, be sure drain is free by pouring hot water into it and seeing it get to the pan below the machine. If this persists you need to troubleshoot the automatic defrost circuit. Could be bad defrost timer.

hello
the defroster seems to be working great .Check for a clogged drain hole or even a block of ice at the base or floor of freezer compartment or look for a hose just above drip tray andr push some flex hose in to clear drain hose or use a can of compressed air . Its usually a frozen pea or lima bean.

Hi and welcome to FixYa, I am Kelly.

This sounds like the freezer compartment drain is clogged. Here is how to make sure it is clear:
1. Unplug the unit and remove freezer contents
2. Pull the unit away from the wall for rear panel access.
3. Direct an external fan into the freezer compartment for just over 2 hours. (It take this long to clear the ice in the compartment drain funnel!)
4. While your doing a manual defrosting session with the fan... open the back of the unit by removing the fiberboard cover. Then clean the condenser coils and fan. After the fan and coil cleaning... use a wet or dry vacuum or rags to empty the drip pan contents. (These can get really nasty) Make sure to clean the very end of the compartment drain tube. Dry icky debris from the drip pan and the water / dirt can cake on the very end of the drain tube and clog it.
5. Near the end of the 2 hour manual defrosting period switch the vacuum to exhaust and force air through the compartment drain tube. This will float out and up any debris that was in the freezer compartment drain funnel.
6. Reinstall the rear fiberboard cover.
7, Return the unit to normal service.
8. Before you reload the freezer depress the door / light switch and make sure the evaporator fan is running with the door switch depressed. Evap and condenser fans run anytime the compressor runs.

After a couple of days watch for signs of ice build up again. If it starts the icing routine again you most likely have an automatic defrosting problem. (Repair of the Automatic Defrosting System may be under the limited / extended warranty depending on your coverage plan)

Defrost drain plugged in fresh food section. Samsung will repair it under warranty. Might pay for it if you complain nicely, if it is out of warranty.

Water is pooling at bottom of fridge, comes out from area at top in the back behind light.

If your freezer is above your refrigerator compartment, this may be your problem:

Your defroster (automatic) may not be working properly. Ice is building up in freezer drain, damming up the drain hose to the outlet. Water then overflows down into the refrigerator compartment.

Maytag side by side fridge freezer leaking water

Your drain plug within the evap area of the freezer is frozen, turn frig off, let sit for day or two with doors open. Once all ice has melted then take rear freezer evap cover off and pour water into try and make sure it drains, if not then unplug drain. This is usually caused by a defrost heater bad or unit not going into defrost when it's supposed to, may be main board.

Zanussi fridge freezer frostfree ZX 57/3 W not working

It sounds like you have a plugged defrost drain line. This is where the water goes to in the bottom of your freezer when it goes through the defrost (removal of ice from the freezer coil) cycle. It sounds like that hole is plugged and now the water/ice has now frozen in the vent that lets air circulate down into your refrigerator compartment. What I usually do in this case is to unplug the refrigerator, empty out the freezer compartment. Usually I also end up either pulling off the back panel or the bottom panel (in the freezer compartment) Looking for that defrost drain hole and actually I use a hair dryer. I can sometimes do this also by pouring small amounts of HOT tap water onto it and then sopping/absorbing it away with a sponge or dishcloth. I repeat this until I get the water to go down the drain tube.

Hope this helps,
Sai.

Ice at the bottom of the freezer

bottom of rezzer compartment is supposed to be frozen( depending on timeof cycle) i wouldnt point to a defrost problem unitil the ice build up is hindering refigeration, its quite possible that thte defrost drain has just frozen itself over, and needs to be cleared to allow defrost water to go into the drip pan under unit

Water Pooling and freezing on floor of freezer

most likely you have a frozen drain in the freezer section so that whne your refrig defrosts the water runs out into the freezer compartment instead of the drain pan underneath. the fix is to flush the drain with warm water to clear the obstruction. the drain can be reached either by removing the cover in the freezer area or by back flushing the line from beneath the refrig.
