Re: holmes bh3955 or holmes hh3690

Depending where you live, here in Vermont we take square footage and multiply by 30 for a rule-of-thumb calculation. This gives us a very conservitive Btu rating. New York City use 20 Btu per square foot and Washington D.C. use 15.

Figure out your square foot requirements - multiply 16 X 20 to get 320 sq ft. Find a heat formula to consider windows and doors and known insulation in the walls. this will give you BTu output required to raise the inside air from 68 degrees (norm) to 72 degrees.

Underfloor Radiant Heating for Your New Sunroom

You want to add a brand new sunroom onto your existing house. The problem is that you are not sure how to heat it. Electric heating with baseboard heaters will spoil the look that you want from your new room. Hot water baseboard is going to present all types of problems getting hooked in to the existing system and piping it. And, if you have hot air heating system then you will have the problem of getting ductwork to the room. There is another way to heat this room easily and efficiently.

Radiant heating has been one of the most comfortable and efficient ways for heating for many years. The problem has been in the past to find a good heating source for small radiant floors that will be affordable, effective and efficient.

This problem has been solved now, with the availability of small new electric combination heater- circulator units. These units use small electric heating elements together with a small circulator pump to give you a all in one heating source and circulator pump.

Now you just have to lay your tubing in the floor of the room you are adding on to your house. Then you run that tubing into your existing basement or other room in your house. The tubing and the electric are attached to the heating unit. Then, wire a thermostat to the unit, and you are now ready to make heat. This really makes heating a new addition room very inexpensive and easy to do.

The greatest thing about using this type of heating system is that most average do-it-yourself types can do this. All that is needed is a basic knowledge of plumbing and electric.
If you are thinking of building that little add-on and are worried about how you will heat it, think about using radiant floor heat and a small electric heater-circulator to do your project.

I recently purchased a Holmes HQH319 heater. I want to use it in a room with tropical birds. Birds are very sensitive to chemical fumes. Is there any Teflon or other coatings on this heater that that may...

You would have to contact the makers of the heater to give you a clear answer on that , most heaters smell when first put on from new and you would have to burn this off first ,

How do I get wood stov in the Chimney?

With a wood stove or vent type chimney it is easy, just take a section of chimney out and insert the heater. With a brick chimney you may have room to put the heater in from inside the house. If not, lower the heater down the chimney. Chimney Heat Exchanger
Hi. I also have the toyo stove and that combined with one of these Heat exchangers will heat a 2000 sq/ft House to the point that you have to open the windows in winter.

I got mine at but I am sure there are of lots of places that have them.

Not sure if a blower is in this model because feel no air comeing from unit

The blower is/was a $69.00 optional add on feature for that heater. To be quite honest, a blower does little on an Infrared Heater. Infrared, unlike Blue Flame Convection Heaters, doesn't waste energy heating the air. It heats objects (floor, walls, furniture, etc). From that the room air heats up. Simply put, it heats a room like the sun heats the earth. It's really more efficient than a gas convection heater. Rated 99.9% efficient at 15,000 Btu's, it will heat a good sized room easily.

I've selling these heaters for several years and I always try to talk the customer out f wasting their money on a blower. It's simply not needed on an infrared heater.

I hope this helped you and thanks for choosing FixYa.

Off/on switch only stays in Of positmpsp2@alum.rpioion even though the u;nit turns on.

It seems to be a mechanical problem, the most probable cause is the bad switch.
Try to open it and see you will come to know about the faults.
There i nothing to worry because the product is working so everything is else is fine.

Most efficient use of Lakewood oil-filled heater? First month's energy bill was extreme! I was told it was more efficient to run it constantly.

These electric heaters and efficiency do not go together at all!!
They are in no way efficient at all!!
Sure they are 100% efficient using the electric provided to them, but hwat is the cost of that electric compared to say gas or fuel oil?
The onlt way they can save you any money is if you live in one small room, heat that and not the rest of the house.
And no it is not more efficient to run it constantly...
If your not using the room you are heating with it turn it off.
Sorry if I seem to be ranting, but as a heating contractor I have seen these sold as "energy savers" many times and it is just a sales pitch and nothing more.
Absolutely NO truth to it whatsoever and they know it.

I hope that this will help you to solve your problem!

Thanks for using Fixya!!

Electric baseboard heater

this is a tough call but with 2000 watts in each room there should be more than enough heat .the rooms should maintain a average temp of 73 to 78 degrees temp without weatherazation and that is of course there is no drafts coming from any windows or near a front or back door that opens and closes alot . Basiclly you have it covered but definatley get the house winterize/insulated real good.I would keep 1 or 2 space heaters on hand just incase the person in house feels there cold just to cover yourself ,usually it the female complaining its cold if its not warm enough but there have been some males that need that temp to be 80 degrees all the time.good luck but im sure it will be ok!!

IIcant find parts for the holmes heaters. Who carries them?

I have the same problem. I mean it keeps going off prematurely. The heating area is relatively clean and there is no reason for this other than the Thermal Circuit Breaker to be going bad.

I too have fruitlessly tried to find the part. It is made by Klixon and the info about it is as follows: 1NT15L-4165 It is a manual reset bimetal temperature circuit breaker. Mine says L86 L = Limit and 86 I believe represents 86 degrees Celsius which is about 187 degrees F for us Americans.

I found the Klixon people and they told me the part was not available through them; but only through Holmes themselves. So, I of course called Holmes Customer Service.

Turns out that I had a little spat with Holmes' CS Jerky... She informed me that Holmes does not sell parts and that the heaters they build and sell are not serviceable. So, I argued that they are irresponsible with regard to the environment. What, it's supposed to go to a landfill now?

But she insisted that this was so that people didn't start fires with their heaters. And she says that she has two young girls at home and wouldn't want anyone burning down their house and killing their family. So I guess after all that has nothing to do with her keeping her job by Holmes selling me another $79 heater, huh?? lol Yeah right!!! Because the guy at corporate would not want one of their heaters to start a fire. That wouldn't be an acceptable risk to make money. (Sarcasm, in case you missed it)

On another note... It's real unfortunate that you have to take the HQH307 completely apart to clean the heating area so as to not have the heater be a fire hazard. But I'm a risk to my family by taking the thing apart and then removing the two retaining screws out and two wire leads off to replace the malfunctioning part. WTF??? Since I can't get the part I suppose I could just bypass the circuit breaker. I know that's not a good idea.

Well, bottom line is, (can ya take a guess?), that I will not be buying another Holmes Heater EVER!!! Thanks Holmes...

Answer: As far as I know you cannot get the part.

If anyone has a lead on the part please let me know here.

Thanks, LightningMan
