I imagine you are connecting up to the DSL service for the first time with a phone company -- the DSL service has a help desk that can lead you through the process.

Whether or not this is the first connection, the computer being attached to the connection needs to assure it is configured to accept a dynamic IP address on the network adapter plugged into the device to enable it to work.

If this is the first time I have been through the setup process myself and the DSL provider's representative did a great job for me, If yours is the same as mine setting up to use a single machine requires activating your circuit and creating and storing the userid and password into the modem to allow you to use the DSL Service. There are some additional steps if you have a router and my provider's agent even walked me through configuring the router to attach to their equipment allowing me to attach multiple computers.
