How to align the sensor on garage doors

I know that the sensors on my garage doors must be out of line and I'd like to know the quickest and simplest way to re-align them.

Thanks

how do you align the sensors on a garage door when they are out of alignment

  • Anonymous Feb 05, 2009

Joel1974's solution only restates the problem. If they were aligned guest wouldn't be asking the question. The problem is "how do I get the lights to both light up"

  • mhjr Feb 08, 2009

My Liftmaster door opener just "clicks" when I push the button or remote. 5 lights flashing. I unplugged to reset and then same problem, 4 flashes. any ideas.

My garage door is not closing. I have to use the wall switch to close it. I dont see any light on the sensors. What is the easiest way to fix it. I am not good in these things. Please let me know.

Ok quick question. How old is your opener? There are two little blocks on each side of the door. are they both green? or is one amber and the other green? When I go out to a customers house with this problem the first thing I do is close the door so is a little darker so you can see the lights. Line them up then I good each one a good little tap with my finger and see if ether light will flicker. If so then there too loose or not lined up as well. One side will always be lite (unless there is no power or a cut wire)

Do they have little lights on each head? If so generally as long as they both light up they are aligned.

My garage door lurches while it is opening

If the alignment is true and rollers move with ease, you should not have any jerking motion. Unlock the door catch from the pulley line of the motor. The door should be FREE to lift by hand. With the door Free of the motor/line-pulley, lift by hand. Do so a number of times and see if it binds or is free to move up and down easily. If it binds, the alignment is off and needs adjustment. If it moves quite well, then the problem can be the door sensors. These are the two face to face sensing devices at the bottom of the metal guides on both sides. These sensors need to be horizontal and fixed to allow Line Of Site to operate correctly. Check both Alignments, Rails and Sensors.

Check to see if sensors (eye) on sides of door are lined up, they need to be looking directly at each other. If that doesn't work change sensors, simple, install, hook up 2 wires per sensor, wire with line to same wire, blank wire to same blank wire and align so sensors see each other.

The sensor light are different colors

The sensors are seeing something directly in line with the beam between the 2 sensors, or your sensors are not aligned so they point directly at each other.

Garage door goes down and few inches and comes back up

Usually this means that your sensors on either side of the door are out of alignment or there is something blocking the sensors from making a connection. I did have a problem once were the door track twisted a little when the door started coming down thus making one sensor turn away a little and not allowing both sensors to make connection. Check to ensure the sensors are communicating correctly. Usually there are two lights, one on each sensor. They usually are red until they are properly lined up then they turn green. Some manufacturers have them flash until they are lined up then they stay on steady.

The lower sensors on the garage door rail are not aligned. Make certain you make an adjustment of the two sensors so they face each other in a strait line.

It sounds like either the safety sensors are not aligned, or the rpm sensor needs replaced. Also whether you replace or repair get a surge protector 900 joules or higher on this unit. You can get a reasonable opener with one remote for 138.00 at most lowes. Thanks BB

Garage door opener will not go down.

After reading the responses I went out and looked at the sensors, but this time instead of aligning up and down I moved the one sideways and WOOHOO! the remote works fine now.

Programing limits on a Grifco MK3 Garage door Operator

It has the "Protector System" (safety sensors). chec the sensor indicator light on the receivinng eye the green light had a slight flicker.cleaned both the sending eye and receiving eye lens of dust and cob webs, then realigned the receiving sensor for a steady green indicator light. then check the door function it now works fine.over time, temperature, and viberation the sensors become dirty and get out of alignment, as no one had tampered with the sensor alignment prior to this. Hope this works for you.
