There are various types of USB sticks or adapters. The most common is an USB memory stick and they come in memory capacities from 256Mb to 32Gb or more.
The USB memory sticks are use to transfer data from a computer to a memory stick and vice versa (ie. copy data from one computer to another computer).
To copy data to and from a USB memory stick, all you have to do is to plug the memory stick into the USB port of a computer, the computer will recognize it as an external memory device.
Wait a few seconds and click to open the memory stick, just like openning a folder on your hard disk. You can then open the hard disk and copy data files from the hard disk to the memory stick in the same way if you were copying data to a floppy disk.
This is pretty easy and once you've used it on your computer you will be glad you have it. They are very handy.
The stick has a usb connector on the one end. You may need uncover it. There should be a plastic cover that pops off on the one end. It should just pull off.
Once you have the cover off then you need to find the usb port on your computer or laptop. Simply plug it in. If it doesn't want to slide it flip it over. It's just upside down. The laptop of computer will usually beep when it detects but don't worry if it doesn't.
You should now see a few messages appear near your clock. Some will say usb device found, then mas storage and perhaps even say your Toshiba usb. That might take a minute the very first time (much quicker the next) before you can use it.
One windows has found and installed it then it is ready to use. Go to my computer and look and you should see a C drive and perhaps D which is usually you cd or dvd rom drive. You may also see other things such as card readers. What you are look for is either Toshiba mass or usb storage device.Or something along that line. That is you usb memory stick installed and ready to use.
You use the stick just like any other drive. You can store anything on it including programs music movies and so on. When you save or copy instead of just saving to my documents save it to the usb stick. And the same if you want to use or copy a file that is on it. It will show up under my computer or anytime you save as another drive (as long as it is plugged in). Because they are seen this way you can erase or delete files, make directories or do almost everything else you can on a normal hard drive. They are just a super useful thing to have. You may find yourself buying a few of these so you can have one for pictures, another for documents, and so on because they are so handy.
Once the files are on it or you are done with it then then you can remove it from the usb port. USB sticks are hot swap things, in other words you can plug them in and unplug them even after the computer is running. They are meant to work that way unlike most other parts. This means you can quickly put in in one computer copy files to it take it out and put in in another all without having to reboot or do anything annoying.
Just so you know to remove the stick you should click on the little usb icon that appears by you clock, a new window will pop up and should list all usb devices including your usb stick Click "stop" on your device. In a second it should say something like you can now safely remove your device. Pull it out of the port close the window and you are good to go. Now some versions of windows and some usb sticks don't really care if you just yank them out. It will never hurt the computer end of things but on larger sticks that have security stuff built in this will and does scramble them up and they are toast. So make sure you know if your stick has this so you can remind yourself about yanking it out.
Enjoy!
