Thank you very much for your many expert solutions.

I was able to fix the problem pretty quickly.

What a really nice bunch of people you are, and so very willing to help.
Perhaps in the future I can be equally as helpful to someone else with a problem I may be familiar with repairing,

For that open back cover of laptop then reattach the ram memory and battery .Make sure your battery is working fine.

Then check.
Also find motherboard after open back cover pull cmos cell from motherboard for 10 minutes then check.
If still same issue then your motherboard chip set has internal issue so after trouble shooting above thing if still same issue then take it to nearest laptop service center because your motherboard need repairing.
Let me know if you need further assistance.
Thanks for using FixYa.

I think i corrupted my BIOS by changing the backup file extension to *.wph. and programing it in. now the battery LED just shines. How do i make it on? This is the Acer Aspire 3000 laptop.

I think your problem is elsewhere. The BIOS is a collection of instructions burned onto a chip. The only way to modify the BIOS (Basic Input Output System), one myst "flash" the chip.

The first thing you should do is change your file extension badk to what ever it should be. Probably the VERY best thing to do is dump the back up and recreate it.

If you are having troubles with your computer operating, you might want to consider restoring to a earlier time using the RESTORE feature

Could be a bad memory chip or a hard drive crash. Can you hear the hard drive engage? If so, is there any clicking or dull thunking sounds? Both of these are indicators of a hard drive failure.

Replacing RAM chip in a acer aspire 3000

I found the user manual at Page 63 of the acer user manual listed these steps for changing the memory: "1 Turn off the computer, unplug the AC adaptor (if connected) and remove the battery pack. Then turn the computer over to access its base. 2 Remove the screws from the memory cover; then lift up and remove the memory cover. 3 (a) Insert the memory module diagonally into the slot, then (b) gently press it down until it clicks into place. 4 Replace the memory cover and secure it with the screw. 5 Reinstall the battery pack, and reconnect the AC adaptor. 6 Turn on the computer. The computer automatically detects and reconfigures the total memory"
