Honestly if you can't get rid of Norton and it's stuck on your system like your saying then you should probably back up your data and start over. But you may want to do this instead this time instead of using Windows XP or Vista.

You can stop using Micro$oft products and download a Free Operating System that does not get viruses or get fragmented. It also comes with Thunderbird. It's called Ultumix.
If you want Ultumix do the following:

If you have a Desktop PC connected directly to the internet (not dial up) and a DVD burner I would recommend you go to, click Ultumix, and give it a try by saving the Torrent Download Link. Then go to and install uTorrent. You will also need to go to and install it as well. Make sure to open burn4free after installing it as well and select English. Then you may close it. Open the torrent file you downloaded in uTorrent. After you save the .iso file to your hard drive (this may take an hour or a day) right click on the .iso file and click burn4free and then Burn ISO. You will need a DVD-R or DVD+R in your DVD drive. DVD-R is recommended. After this reboot your computer and make sure to boot from the DVD drive. You may need to press additional keys during start up to get this to happen. You will see a menu that says PCLinuxOS 2007. Select LiveCD and press enter (this mode will let you try Ultumix without installing it on your hard drive). Now it will ask you some questions about your computer like what language you speak. You will most likely use Ethernet as your internet. Now you will see a screen to log in.

To try Ultumix without installing it to see what it will be like click on Owner and then type owner all lower case in the password field and press the enter key on your keyboard. Please note that it will run much slower than normal in Live Mode. When you install it it will run much faster. If you try the programs on the desktop and like them you may want to install it. We will get to that later. Open the icon marked internet and use it to get to Get into your e-mail. If that works you should be happy. At this point I would like to point out that even though this system can't get viruses or fragmentation (unless you fill the partition over 95%) Firefox can be affected by some spyware and or trojans. If this should occur you simply click Tools > Clear All Private Data > check everything > Clear All Private Data Now.

If you want to install this on your computer you can also leave Windows on as well but you will be asked if you want to run both during setup. Click start and log out. Now click the root account and type in root all lower case. Click Install PCLinuxOS. Go threw the wizard and follow the instructions. You have the option of resizing your Windows partition and using the rest for Ultumix or erase everything and start over. Ultumix can run most windows 95, 98, and 2000 programs in WINE. You will also find that it can run some XP programs as well like Office 2003.

Have fun. If you still want to live with Micro$oft software reply to me again and I will walk you threw the painful process of protecting your computer. You will need to repeat this process I give you every 12 months or less to keep your computer running. You should also be told that in 6 months Microsoft is planning to stop extending service to XP users.

Update problem with symantec antivirus

Close the antivirus program and reopen it. When it isclosed, the icon yellow for norton will not appear on bottom right hand side along with volume icon etc. You may also restart the computer to see id that helps. Right click the Norton icon and see id it says ENABLE AUTOPROTECT or DISABLE AUTOPROTECT. Try enabling.Try the same update after a while. If that does not work, try reinstalling Norton. I get 100s of viruses from 100s of friends and all sorts of things happen to me anti virus etc

Error 1706 & error occured while loading savrt32.dll

They are the manual instructions but Symantec to have an automatic removal tool floating around. put the CD back in the drive (or get access to it from it's directory or whatever) then repair it as follows:

C:\> msiexec /i "D:\SAV\Symantec AntiVirus.msi"

let it go through it's dog&pony show then when it's done, uninstall it properley:

C:\> msiexec /x "D:\SAV\Symantec AntiVirus.msi" or

Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility package from:

Install and run. Remove the offending Symantec Install Package from the list. Wella.

Symantec client security

here u got:

When you install Symantec AntiVirus or Symantec Client Security, you see the error message "1920 Service Defwatch failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services."

This problem has more than one cause, so more than one solution is provided. To fix the problem, try each of the following solutions in the order that they appear.

Confirm that you have the correct rights and permissions
The most common cause of this problem is incorrect rights or permissions. Make sure that you have Local Administrator rights to the target computer. Confirm that no restrictions on the Local Administrator or Domain Administrator accounts exist.. Follow the directions in the document Troubleshooting Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition installations: Checking rights and permissions.

Confirm that the Defwatch service has the correct settings
This problem can happen when the Defwatch service account has incorrect settings. Make sure that the Defwatch service is set to log on as the Local System account. Confirm that the service is allowed to interact with the desktop.

To confirm the Defwatch service settings
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  2. In the Open box, type services.msc and then click OK.
  3. Do one of the following, depending on your program version:
    • For Symantec AntiVirus 10.x, right-click the Symantec AntiVirus Definition Watcher entry.
    • For Symantec AntiVirus 9.x and earlier, right-click the Defwatch entry.
  4. Click Properties.
  5. On the Log On tab, confirm that the Local System Account is selected and that "Allow service to interact with desktop" is checked.
  6. Click OK.

Look for a Program file at the root of the OS drive.
If McAfee antivirus 4.03 or 4.5 was installed on the computer, look for a file that is named "Program" at the root of the OS drive. If the file exists, delete it.

Delete leftover registry keys from a previous version of Symantec or Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition
Leftover registry keys from a previous version of Symantec or Norton AntiVirus Corporate Edition can cause this problem. Delete the registry keys and then install Symantec AntiVirus again.

WARNING: In the next steps you will edit the Windows registry. Back up the registry before you make any changes to it, because incorrect changes to the registry can result in permanent data loss or corrupted files. Modify only the registry keys that are specified.
For instructions, see How to back up the Windows registry.

To delete the registry key
  1. On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
  2. In the Open box, type the following text:

  3. Click OK.
  4. In the Windows Registry Editor, in the left pane, click My Computer.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Find.
  6. In the Find what box, type the following text:

Delete all keys and values that contain this string.
  7. Go to and delete the following key:

  8. Exit the Windows Registry Editor.

If the problem persists, manually remove the previously-installed version of Symantec AntiVirus. To find directions for your product version, read Manual uninstallation documents for Symantec Client Security products

And please if it was helpfull for you rate this solution as SOLVED
