Problem for Pioneer SD-533HD5 53 in. Rear Projection HDTV Television

Pioneer projection TV- hard time starting, shuts off at times.

Hi, I recently inherited a non-working Pioneer SD-533HD5 projection TV, built Dec. 02. Initially, it would not turn on at all, but I found and replaced an open 5 amp fuse.
When I push the power button, the TV will try to start- the green light will come on for a second then turn red again. After I do this 5 or 6 times, the green light will stay on and the TV will work properly with a decent picture. After an indefinite time, if there is a particularly bright scene that comes up on the screen, the TV will turn itself off, then back on right away. Sometimes this may be accompanied by a green flash on the screen. After it turns itself back on, it'll work fine until another bright scene comes up again on whatever show I'm watching.

I removed and inspected the power supply board and resoldered a bunch of questionable joints, but it didn't make much difference.
What else should I do?
Thanks,
Dave

- Thanks for the quick reply. I am having trouble seeing any capacitors that have damage- is there any other way to diagnose them? And here's a dumb question: is the "deflection section" the area where the convergence ICs are located? I will remove whichever board is necessary again to have a better look.

Thanks,

Dave

Sounds TV has few weak/dry/leaky electrolytic capacitors in circuit.
Check and find out electrolytic capacitors that are leaky or top is bulged or their plastic jacket/ cover seems shrink in power supply board and main board of TV specially in deflection section, replace them with same value and working volts that are written on those bad capacitors.
Hope that will solve TV problem.
Thanks.

hi,

have a friend assist you measuring the output voltages of the

power supply

have it noted:

a) when you plug the unit

b) when the unit is on

c) when the unit is turning off

might also be better wiring 2 insulated wires, if only possible

on the capacitors that have 160V rating, secondary side of the

power supply.

please unplug the unit when doing solder work.

try also to check for cold solder on the flyback pins,

resolder it to be sure, use a good quality soldering lead.

hope this helps initially, thanks for using Fixya!

- hi, again

you have mentioned:

"I removed and inspected the power supply board and resoldered a bunch of questionable joints, but it didn't make much difference."

we will focus our attention first on the power supply board you are talking., and that part is i'm

pertaining about. measuring the output voltages.

the TV have vertical and horizontal deflection circuits.

the convergence IC you are asking about works only when horizontal deflection circuits is

running.,

without the necessary voltages on the horizontal deflection circuits your convergence circuits

will not work.

- the problem of your TV is on the ABL circuits on the deflection board

ABL - automatic brightness limiter

it might just be a resistor coming fro the B+ , which is feed to the ABL circuit of the flyback

these resistor might have change value.

- these can be best explained and pointed if you have the service manual you might get it with a fee., been trying to look for free one , but still unlucky
