HELLO!
The answer to this is simple....SP every time. That is of course you want to cram lots of programmes on to one tape and if that is so, then use LP.
LP slows the tape to half of normal speed and therefore sound and vision are slightly compromised. For maximum quality, SP.

SOURCE: SLP not working

I assume what you get from a recording attempt is garbled video, or snow? Audio OK?

The first thing is to clean the video head. The best way is to do this manually: take the top cover off, and using a lint free cloth moistened with rubbing alcohol, or an electronic wash product, clean the head. The head is a rotating aluminum cylinder located near the backside of the deck assembly. The actual heads are at the bottom of this cylinder- you can see them- just place a finger in the moistened cloth, and turn the head a few rotations. You should be able to see some deposits on the cloth.

The VCR has at least four "heads" two are for 2 hr and two for 6 hour (sp and slp)

It is most likely one of the heads used in the SLP mode is slightly blocked with tape debris--heads need to be manually cleaned in the right way.

I cannot find my manual what is the speed to record on the vcr for 8 hours

Unfortunately, most VCR recorders/tapes don't have an 8 hour option. It is 2 hours on SP (standard), LP for 4 hours or EP (SLP, depending on the unit) for 6 hours. (The slower recording speed usually gives poorer video quality.)

You would need a non-standard VCR cassette to get 8 hour recording. If you do have a tape that would hold 3 hours at SP, then use an EP setting to get 8 hours of recording on your VCR. I don't think I've seen any tapes that do that recording length even when VCRs were popular.

I wish that I had better news.

Hi - I can't switch my vcr speed from spl to lp.

On this combo, the vcr can play SLP, LP and SP but can only record SLP(6h) or SP(2h).
