Sad face icon

I have a brand new 30gb ipod, I bought it off Ebay. I went to charge it, and now it shows a low battery indicator, then goes to the apple logo, then the sad face icon appears for a couple of seconds, then back to the same cycle.

I am having the same problem with an 80gb I received in 2006 and the information on the apple web site has not helped at all. My IPod will not reset; the only thing it will do is come on, show the sad face and turn off again. Is this something that can be fixed? And if so, how? There aren't any apple stores in my area and the their site hasn't helped.

To reset an iPod with a Click Wheel, including: sad face icon - ipodnano3.jpg icon_ipod_5g.gif ipodnano2.jpg sad face icon - ipodnano.jpgttp://i.fixya.net/uploads/images/ipodnano.jpg" alt="ipodnano.jpg" csad face icon - ipodphoto.gif> ipodg4.gif ipodmini.gif

  • iPod nano (3rd generation)
  • iPod classic
  • iPod (5th generation)
  • iPod nano (2nd generation)

  • iPod with color display (iPod photo)
  • iPod (Click Wheel)
  • iPod mini
  • iPod mini (2nd generation)
  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

Flashing icons while charging... am I really charging?

If the iPod is showing the "Sad iPod face" icon, this means that the hard drive inside the iPod (located on the logic/circuit board) has died/failed and needs to be replaced. If you plan on replacing this part, you may also need to purchase and solder a new battery to the iPod logic board if you were to do it yourself.

My ipod shows a sad face

Hopefully your ipod is still under warranty, because this is indicative of a hardware problem.

You could try to force it into disk mode and do a restore, if that doesn't work then it needs to be sent in for repair.

My ipod has a sad face icon and the famous 5 r's did not take care of my problem.

Unfortunately, it means your iPod's hard drive is severely damaged. Try putting it into disk mode and formatting it with windows, sometimes that'll take care of bad sectors on the drive and MIGHT make it usable again. It's either that or take it back to Apple to have them fix it.
