My HP 5610 All in One has worked perfectly for almost a year. Recently I allowed automatic windows updates on my computer and had to reinstall Norton's 360. Then my scan option stopped working. HP Solutions also doesn't start up automatically as it used to and i get the no scan option message when i press scan on the printer. I uninstalled and reinstalled the software but it is still not working.

  • maggieryumin Jun 12, 2008

no connection. there is no computer connection. refer to device documentation to troubleshoot. press ok.

I have same problem. Everything worked perfectly for almost a year then scanner starter with the "no scan option" message. After HP support could not fix, (actually, after numerous email instructed attempts to fix, they said they had withdrawn support the same month, (July 2007) I purchased the 5610v, (RIP OFF), I found this site and did all three suggested fixes, but still get "no scan options" PLUS "unable to communicate with scanning software" and "unable to communicate with scanning device". I have the check in the icon, the destination list is populated, and I have reinstalled 5 times. Any other suggestions? Thanks, Windows 98 user.

Check whether the Digital Imaging Monitor is running .

If yes, good.

Now, please open HP Solution Center and setup the destination list .

Double click >> HP Solution Center >> settings >> scan settings and preferences >> scan to .. setup >>
Add all the entries from " available scan destinations " to "front panel destination list " >> click >> ok .
Now, try to scan from the front panel of the All-in-One .

I tried all the other solutions that were posted here, nothing worked.
Then I solved my own problem by a fluke

Here's what you do.
Click Start.
Go to All Programs.
Click Accessories
Select Scanner and Camera Wizard (I don't know if everyone has this, I'm just telling you what worked for me).
Select the printer, then click OK.

Next follow the steps to scan your picture.
The button the printer still doesn't work, but at least I can scan now.

To resolve the issue, follow the solutions below in the order presented. Solution one: Verify that the Digital Imaging Monitor is ready The Digital Imaging Monitor must be running for the scan to feature to function. The Digital Imaging Monitor normally displays in the system tray in the bottom-right corner of the computer screen, which is next to the time. The Digital Imaging Monitor is ready when a check mark displays on the icon. This can take some time after startup to complete the initialization and for the check mark to display on the icon. If the Digital Imaging Monitor displays in the system tray, proceed to Solution two - Populate the destination list . If the Digital Imaging Monitor does not display in the system tray, complete the following steps for Windows 98, ME, and XP.

  1. Click Start , then Run .
  2. On the Open line, type msconfig .
  3. Click OK .
  4. On the System Configuration screen, click the Startup tab.
  5. Search the list for the HP Digital Imaging Monitor . If HP Digital Imaging Monitor is not on the list, the driver was not correctly installed or a custom install was used. Proceed to Solution three - Uninstall and reinstall the software .
  6. Select the HP Digital Imaging Monitor check box.
  7. Click Apply , and then Close . Click Yes to restart.
Solution two: Populate the destination list The destination list must be populated for the scan to feature to function. Complete the following steps to populate the destination list.
  1. Open the HP Solution Center. Use one of the following methods to open the HP Solution Center.
    • On the Windows desktop, double-click the HP Solution Center icon.
    • On the taskbar, click Start , point to Programs or All Programs , point to HP , and then click HP Solution Center .
If you have installed more than one HP device, click the tab for the All-in-One product. The HP Solution Center shows only the functions, settings, and support options that are appropriate for the selected HP product.
  2. Click Settings .
  3. Click Scan Settings and Preferences .
  4. Click Scan to… Setup .
  5. Click the Destination List tab. NOTE: Depending on the computer performance, it can take several minutes for the Front Panel Destination List to populate after turning on the printer or computer.
  6. If the Front Panel Destination List is empty, this is the reason the All-in-One is generating the error message, and you should continue with this procedure. If the Front Panel Destination List contains valid scan destinations, proceed to Solution three - Uninstall and reinstall the software .
  7. Click each program that you want to display in the scan to list.
  8. Click the Add arrow.
  9. Click OK .
  10. Scan a document using the All-in-One scan to feature.
  11. If the scan fails using the scan to feature, try to scan using the HP Solution Center Scan button. If the scan still fails, proceed to Solution three - Uninstall and reinstall the software .
Solution three: Uninstall and reinstall the software
  1. Insert the software CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer. The software installer should automatically start.
  2. If the software installer does not automatically start, complete the following steps:
    1. Click Start , and then Run .
    2. On the Open line, type X:\setup , where X is the letter of the CD-ROM drive.
    3. Click OK .
  3. On the installer screen, click Uninstall . If Uninstall is not an option, the software installation was incomplete.
  4. Insert the software CD into the CD-ROM drive of the computer. The software installer should automatically start.
  5. If your model supports a custom install, HP Imaging Device Functions must be installed in order to scan from the unit to a computer. The recommended install will install this feature automatically. It must be manually selected during a custom install.
  6. Follow the onscreen instructions until the printer software is completely installed.
  7. After successful installation, scan a document.
  8. If the scan fails and you have completed all of the solutions in this document, service your product.

I don't think HP is crap - I think it is a problem with either MS Updates or Norton's 360 (in my case, anyway).
I tried something a bit different. I (again) uninstalled then reinstalled the software using the original CD but also allowed the update software option (the message said there IS no update). I left Norton's 360 on, contrary to the installing instructions. Once installed, I found the HP programme in the programme files and pinned the HP Solutions to the start menu (I was having problems starting the scanner automatically or even finding the HP scanning icon). Now when I press the scan button on the console, I still get the "no scan option" but am able to use all the scan options via the computer screen (ie. the HP Solutions panel). I've restarted the computer and checked that there are no other problems and so far, so good.

I don't know ., hours of frustration .. trying to scan to computer and vice versa, and on a mac .. never a problem in 4 years. after reading all this stuff about hp problems and hours of solutions that don't work i am glad i didn't try all the solutions .. i barely understand the directions ... i think i will buy a new scanner and NOT an HP Product

Posted on Jan 14, 2012

The solutions on the site didn't work, but I was able to scan as suggested from the desktop. Not perfect solution, but good enough, after hours of trying to rectify.. Thanks all.

Hi, I had a similar problem with a 5590, the destinations list is empty.

The main issue is that there is no scan to setup.
I am wondering how such a product should rely on automatic detection with no way to manage if something in not working.

Best Regards

SOURCE: scanning is not working

Open the solution center and click on settings. Take the pointer on scan settings and click on scan to setup.
A new destination list will open and take all the entries, one by one, to right, and click on update the device. If it is already on right, please take it to left and click on update the device and again take it to right and click on update the device.
Then restart the printer and the issue will be fixed.

Refer to device documentation to trouble shoot

you need to set up your scan to option.
this can be done from the hp software
open solution center click settings then scan settings
from there select scan to set up
a window will open and then click on front panel destination list
once again a window will open with a double pane on the left side is your short cut options click on them one at a time click add then once satisfied with options click update the device or ok
if it fails to update reset the printer and try those steps again, or re install just the drivers
if the same message appears then check the settings on your firewall
