Error Message My HP 1600 PSC gives the error message "remove and check color cartridge" which I've done 20 times.  I don't know what I'm checking and there's nothing in the manual which refers me to this problem.

Re: Error Message

I've run into the same problem and found that unplugging the power to the printer often resolves the problem.

Re: Error Message

Don't you love these generic and useless, uninformative error messages! All you can do at this point is replace it, even if it looks like it still has ink.

It may be defective, have a clogged jet, or other problems, but all we know is that when the computer asks it to print, it cannot, but does not say why, so you are asked to remove and check it.

There is a slight possibility that it is a printer malfunction. If the replacement cartridge responds the same way, then you may need to look into replacing the printer. They are not usually worth trying to fix. I'm very sorry.

Re: Error Message

You are most likely using a compatible cartridge as some compatibles cause this malfunction

"Check color cartridge" error message

Try resetting the printer to factory defauts. Hold down the # and 6 buttons. Pull out the power cable while holding these buttons down. Keep your fingers on these buttons and put back the power cable. It should now show (full/partial reset). Follow the prompts and setup all your original features. If this fails then you might have a hardware problem.(Carriage assembly or Cartridge Holder)

The following error message appears on the color graphics display after you insert a cartridge: Remove and Check Print Cartridges . The printer will not print. The message does not specify which cartridge has caused the error. Solution This error message indicates that the printer cannot determine which cartridge is causing the error. Follow the steps below to solve the problem.
  1. Remove the color cartridge from the left stall (which has a blue latch) and refasten the latch. Leave the other cartridge in place.
  2. Close the printer, wait 10 to 15 seconds, then look at the LCD display.
    • If the LCD display reads Insert Color Cartridge in Left Stall , the color cartridge may be causing the problem. Follow the steps below:
      1. Clean the color cartridge contacts.
      2. Reinsert the color cartridge into the carriage and close the blue latch.
      3. Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
      4. If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the color cartridge.
    • If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , follow the steps below:
      1. Reinsert the color cartridge.
      2. Remove the black or photo cartridge, depending on which one is installed in the right stall. The right stall has the gray latch. Be sure to refasten the latch on the empty stall.
      3. Clean the black or photo cartridge contacts.
      4. Reinsert the black or photo cartridge.
      5. Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
      6. If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the black or photo cartridge.

  1. Remove and then reinsert the cartridge indicated in the error message.
  2. If the error is still displayed, clean the contacts.
    1. If the error message is Error. Remove and Check Black or Photo Cartridge , the following steps may help:
    1. Remove both cartridges, lower the latches, and close the printer access door.
    2. Turn off the unit by pressing the On button on the front panel. Wait for the printer to completely shut down.
    3. Turn the printer back on by pressing the On button.
    4. When the message display reads Insert Print Cartridges , open the access door and replace the cartridges.
    1. If neither of the steps above fixed the problem, either the cartridge or the printer is faulty

    Remove and check color cartridge

I cleaned mine with alcohol and Q-tip and then shook it 25 times to insure that the ink was penetrating the application lines. My hunch is it first got dirty, and then dried up on the exterior prevent additional ink from leaving the cartridge.
