Regardless of my location -- strong signal area or weak signal area -- while talking with a caller or someone I call, suddenly the other party loses all sound while I can still hear them with no problem. Usually only lasts for a second, maybe two, and then normal. May happen only once or several times during a brief conversation. I transferred my sim card to a blackberry pearl as an experiment. A test call to that phone resulted in a repeat of this condition. Could a faulty sim card be the culprit?
I use an unlocked treo 680 on T-Mobile.

- Good suggestion but I have already replaced the SIM card after speaking with a tech support person at Palm. The problem persists. the first conversation using the new SIM I lost my voice several times. It happens on almost every call I make. I don't want to do a hard reset as I have a large number of contacts and saved text messages that I don't want to risk losing. backup to my mac has been an ordeal each time I do it. I may switch to an unlocked iPhone whch works fine with T-mobile.
If the problem repeated when you swapped your SIM card to another phone, it rules out it being a hardware issue. You can take your SIM card to a cellular store and have them replace it. That should fix the issue. I doubt it is the card itself since the card simply holds your account info for accessing the network. It sounds more like an issue within the network where the internal settings associated with your SIM # weren't properly set. Getting a new SIM card will force the system to fully set and associate your account with the SIM and should (fingers crossed) help fix the issue. Good luck!

- I guess I'm confused. Your original note said that you transferred your SIM card to another phone (BB Pearl) and the problem repeated on the Pearl. If the problem followed to the new phone, it obviously isn't an issue with the phone. Won't switching to an iPhone (or any other) just cause the problem to move to that new phone? Or am I simply reading your original posting incorrectly? (scratching head)
