I-Pod wheel broken?

Hello, can you help me? I have a 5th generation 30GB i-pod that wsa purchased Dec 2005. I was listening to something and suddenly it froze and the wheel no longer let me stop/start/turn off the i-pod. I tried to run the battery down but obviously this wa taking along time as it was stuck! I managed to reset it but the wheel was still not responding and therefore not allowing me to listen to or choose any music. Since then, I can charge and get the main screen up but nothing else! It's definitely not the battery. I don't want to buy a new one and apple repair is the same price, could there be a cheaper and easier solution? Please help!

My buddies iPod Classic (160gb) just came
up with the same problem. I cannot reset it (as the click wheel does
not respond), I have done a Restore through iTunes... still nothing.
    One
strange thing is that if you leave it unlocked, the screen will turn
its backlight on about once every minute... I'm currently letting its
battery run out to see if that makes any difference. I doubt it though.

    Help!!!

i have the same problem and so far ive taken it to the apple store and they told me the only thing they could do what try to fix it but i run off a PC and they would have to restore it to a mac and i would loose all 5000 of my songs and most of them arent even from my house so that was a no go.
i think it mightve gotten wet but im not sure. ne ideas?

  1. Toggle the Hold switch on and off. (Slide it to Hold, then turn it off again.)
  2. Press and hold the Menu and Center (Select) buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears, about 6 to 8 seconds. You may need to repeat this step.
Tip: If you are having difficulty resetting your iPod, set it on a flat surface. Make sure the finger pressing the Select button is not touching any part of the click wheel. Also make sure that you are pressing the Menu button toward the outside of the click wheel, and not near the center.
If the above steps did not work, try connecting iPod to a power adapter and plug the power adapter into an electrical outlet, or connect iPod to your computer. Make sure the computer is turned on and isn't set to go to sleep.

I want to know which generation is the Ipod 30G model A1136, thanks

There are two 5th gen iPods, A1136 model is the older 2005 model, not the later 2006 model.

Here is Apples link: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353#ipodfifth2 which will show the differences, but not by model number. The reason I know this model number is the first 5th gen 2005 is because I have one. Also older 2005 should have '2005' engraved on rear.
