Re: MK4004GAH troubleshooting

It it's a mechanical failure, it's toast. If it simply will not boot, you have a few options. The first thing you'll want to do is rescue whatever personal files you have on the hard drive. Let's start with the free options:

You'll need something to save the files to, like an external hard drive, or USB thumbdrive if you don't have many files. Otherwise, use something like to load the files to an online storage site.

Next, download (on a different computer, of course) and burn a LiveCD to boot the computer from the CDrom. If the hard drive is still good but won't boot, you'll be able to open the drives folder, find your files, and drag them to a USB external hard drive. You should be able to get online with some of the LiveCD's, and can load up to an online storage site. Some good live CD options are:

  • Ubuntu - You can run Ubuntu from the CD. It will read NTFS drives (WindowsXP and Vista). Ubuntu is an excellent operating system, and when you're done rescuing your personal files, you can install Ubuntu to the hard drive -which I highly recommend over Windows.
  • SystemRescueCD - is a bootable CD for the purpose of fixing problems like this. It does have a strong learning curve, so be prepared to read through the website for instructions.
  • Helix - is a Computer Forensics tool that is often used to fix some windows problems or rescue personal data.
Ubuntu would be the easiest to use, but I recommend having all three on hand in the future.

Another option would be Spinrite, by Steve Gibson of Spinrite is about $80 USA, but if you work around computers, it's worth the money. Here's a YouTube video on Spinrite

Hope you get it fixed.

Re: MK4004GAH troubleshooting

Define "dead" is it merely a failed partition, or bad sectors on the platter itself? if its bad sectors in some cases you can send it away and the will change the steel disk itself, but usually it costs quite a bit to have done, if its just a dead partition, you could plug it into a system as a slave, boot to a windows XP disk, destroy the damaged partition and simply lay a new one..

I have a Toshiba (MK4004GAH) 40 GB Hard Drive which was taken out from a Old Toshiba Laptop. I bought a 1.8" IDE casing with USB and connected to my new laptop....however, it fails to detect the HDD....

You have to make sure that you have connected the HDD in the right way. Please open it and ensure that you placed the disk rightly into the casing with each pin tapping the rightful hole, see the casing's small manual. Note also that the laptop has to detect the casing as well, so cross check the casing to ensure that its working.

I took my ipod to factory settings as one person told me to do and the computer still does not recognize the ipod. Its not the ipod, it's the computer!

May be the usb port. If you have a direct usb port at the back of the unit, try it. If don´t, look at the installation of the usb in your settings.
