Question about Toshiba (MK4004GAH) 40 GB Hard Drive
It it's a mechanical failure, it's toast. If it simply will not boot, you have a few options. The first thing you'll want to do is rescue whatever personal files you have on the hard drive. Let's start with the free options:
You'll need something to save the files to, like an external hard drive, or USB thumbdrive if you don't have many files. Otherwise, use something like xdrive.com to load the files to an online storage site.
Next, download (on a different computer, of course) and burn a LiveCD to boot the computer from the CDrom. If the hard drive is still good but won't boot, you'll be able to open the drives folder, find your files, and drag them to a USB external hard drive. You should be able to get online with some of the LiveCD's, and can load up to an online storage site. Some good live CD options are:
Another option would be Spinrite, by Steve Gibson of GRC.com. Spinrite is about $80 USA, but if you work around computers, it's worth the money. Here's a YouTube video on Spinrite
Hope you get it fixed.

Define "dead" is it merely a failed partition, or bad sectors on the platter itself? if its bad sectors in some cases you can send it away and the will change the steel disk itself, but usually it costs quite a bit to have done, if its just a dead partition, you could plug it into a system as a slave, boot to a windows XP disk, destroy the damaged partition and simply lay a new one..
