To add water or not to add water????

We purchased a durabrand HSC20 slow cooker for the first time and there are no instructions on how to use it. I can understand that the various setting make the outer casing get hot, But do you need to put water inside it so that the ceramic pot cooks the food or do you just leave it standing?

Sorry we are complete slow cooker virgins and are trying to safe than sorry!

Re: To add water or not to add water????

Slow cookers do not need water in the base unit to cook the food in the ceramic insert. The ceramic insert gets hot from the base and cooks the food. Here is a good guide to cooking with a slow cooker. enjoy

Re: To add water or not to add water????

In reply to other problems, I have a Durabrand HSC20 Slow Cooker and same as others find the instructions somewhat limited. I telephoned ASDA customer support who told me the auto function is for example, say you got up late like me...and you put a casserole in the slow cooker at 12 noon, you want it to be ready for 7pm, use the auto switch as this brings the food to the boil quickly cooks it for an hour and a half then lowers the temperature for the remainder of the cooking time...clever huh?

The cooker will cook a small joint of meat without liquid or a small chicken, the meat just falls off the bone!

I also use casserole mixes such as Colemans and Asda's own and have got really good results.

Hope this helps.

Re: To add water or not to add water????

I have one of these and yes the instructions are rubbish!
I usually put mine on in the morning pre 9, to have it ready for around 6pm.
My advise is to brown any meat - just lightly to seal it, then add your onion/veg herbs e.t.c, add a small amount of water, say 30mls (if the recipe has no stock) then put your meat on top. Lid on, turn to low and leave.
Delicios meat that fall from the bone and the veg should be done too.

I've lost the instructions on how to use my slow cooker. Do I need to put water in the base?

Which base are you referring to? The removal black base yes, you need to add water according to what you are cooking for example a stew, a chicken, beans etc., The cooking element, which is the base after you remove the black base in which the glass cover fits over you do not need to add water.

Trying to slow cook

Well let me tell ya that's one of my favorite things to do
Just pop that yummy piece of meat right into the pot. add 3 cups of water. Add some salt and pepper, and turn it on low before you go to bed and in the morning you will have something awesome, with nice broth. But you need to ck, the water leval, dont let it go dry, you may need to add more water. .You don't need to cover the hole roast with water 1/3 up is good. You will have nice broth . I can make awsome gravie but thats next time.Bonapatite DFD please rate me.TK U

How much liquid to add???

Try going to the Durabrand web site and search for your model of crock pot. There should be a manual that you can download. If there is not, try contacting their customer support.

How much chicken and vegetables did you put in? And what about the tomato sauce? If you used a can of tomato sauce, I don't think 1/2 cup of water would be enough. It would be too thick.

Please remember to rate my solutions! Thanks

Durabrand replacement slow cooker lid

freddiej - my base got 'fried' somehow and won't work now. I have the lid & inside I would be happy to send to you if you can't find the manufacturer.
I can't even find out how to order another base. Durabrand is obviously the maker of many, cheaper items like cookware and electronic speakers.
you can contact me at libertybrooke at if you want the lid.
God bless.

Durabrand 5 qt slow cooker model MD-TC5002

My durabrand crockpot was given as a gift this past Christmas 2007. The inside part cracked severely when I was trying to make a pot roast. Where do I contact these people to get a replacement. I have not receipt as it was a gift. Walmart does not have any in stock to replace the inner part. I tried several stores. I cannot find the company online to contact them for a replacement.
