Maxtor Diamondmax 80GB ATA 133 help!

Not sure what to do.. first my Maxtor external hard rive began causing my pc to hang up, causing me to have to disconnect it and restart and now my pc won't even recognize the External HD. Am I dead in the water or is there a way to get my files back? I have years and years of family pictures, home movies, resume's, passwords, etc.... please help!!

    Campus,

I truly appreciate the tip, unfortunately you are answering a question from someone who has limited abilities when it comes to computers. When you say slave my new drive, I have no clue what that means :) Not even sure which is my "new" drive versus my "old". Sorry for being so lacking in what is likely so easy for you, but any addt'l info you can provide to help an amateur would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Again, thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate it. Unfortunately, my skills in opening computers and knowing what to do once it is open is more limited than my knowledge of nuclear fission. I do in fact have the external HD open and it shows a diagram which says my DS (slave drive) is J48 and J46. Next to J48 it says "CS Enabled" and next to J46 it says "Cap Limit". Everything else you mention is still foriegn to me, sorry. I know how frustrating it is to help a novice at something but I have no idea how to "jumper it" or what that means. I have no idea what an HDD IDE cable is or where it would be on or in my computer. Then booting up I assum would be as normal or would I have to do it on DOS or somethng? Again, no clue about that type of thing. And if it does detect it as primary slave in the BIOS, what does that mean? lol. Seriously, sorry I'm such a novice, the only way to help me is to be specific and not sure if you want to spend the tim trying, and I wouldn't blame you at all if you didn't.

    Thanks again!

There are several programs you can use to get your data off.
You will have to slave your new drive on to the IDE cable that your old one is on, you can then use symantec ghost to clone the old drive to the new,
Acronis true image is the other program you can use, put acronis true image on the new drive and the slave the old drive and take and image of it then recover it to the new drive.
Hope this helps

If your external drive is able to be pulled apart get the drive out of it and on it you will see the jumper settings. Jumper it to slave and then plug it onto your HDD IDE cable in your computer. Boot your computer up and see if it is detected as primary slave in the BIOS, you should then be able to retreive your data onto your computer.
Once you have done that try reformatting the external drive.

Before you do that, try a new cable from your external drive it may have a fault.

Maxtor DiamondMax 11 is a SATA Hardisk and you need SATA External Case. After adding the Harddisk, all you have to do is connect it to the system via the cable of the external case. There is no need for additional drivers/ CD as all the external harddisks are 'plug and play'and the Operating System detects them automatically.

Hope it helps! Good Luck!

Windows Xp Setup Problem : "setup cannot access the disk". I have HDD: Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 80GB ATA/133 HDD.

try doing a F disk on the hard drive first then format it and make it the active drive and then try installing the xp software. if it has had another operating system say for instance windows ME it will not install on that drive without removing it. You can also go to www.maxtor.com and download their free hard drive tools to see if there is a problem that thier software can fix. the software is for free.

Power comes from the power supply. Check yellow and black and red and black. You need both 5v and 12v. Are you sure you have the jumper set correctly for the application? Master or single - master with slave present or some computers require CS (cable select)

HDD unable to detect at My Computer

Well first I would pull the hard drive out of the case. I would then get a USB to IDE/SATA drive cable. I would connect the drive not being able to be detected to another computer via USB.

If it works the drive is still good but the data might be corrupt. If the data is corrupt I would be sure to get any stuff you can off of it and basically reformat and reload.

Musical tones from Maxtor Diamondmax 10 Model 6V250F0

All hard drives are about as delicate as an egg when they're running. It's dead. You can pay a data recovery company to retrieve what little of the data is still intact, but it will cost you a lot of money - not worth it unless there's something particularely precious on it.

Whether the beep is an actual speaker inside the drive that beeps when a serious error is detected, or if it is just a side-effect of the heads scraping on the platters, is of little importance.

For your next drive, buy a good one. I buy almost exclusively from Seagate and WD. Maxtor just doesn't make good hard drives.
