Question about ViewSonic VX900 19" LCD Monitor
My Viewsonic VX900 gave up the ghost the other day. The screen went completely blank. After reading this site for a while, I tried a few things and found that there is an image that I can see if I turn the room lights off and shine a flashlight on the screen. This leads me to suspect either a bad inverter or a bad CCFL/backlight. So the next thing I did was partially disassemble the beast. I found that there are 2 CCFLs mounted in a single reflector. The bulbs look okay to me (not that I would know what they'd look like if there weren't okay). The inverter also looks okay (same disclaimer).
Individual CCFL bulbs cost maybe $15 and I'd need 2, but to be honest, disassembling them from the reflector looks tricky and I don't really want to be messing with mercury vapor either. The assembly (2 bulbs in reflector) costs $70. New inverter also costs $70.
My question is, is there any way to try and figure out whether it's the backlight or the inverter? I don't have any sophisticated testing equipment like an oscilloscope but I do have a volt/ohmmeter. I'd like to only spend $70 once, not twice on a new inverter AND a new backlight if only one is broken.
Here is a pic of the fuses on the inverter board for a Viewsonic vx900, you can visually inspect them as well if you do not have a volt meter. While visual inspection is not 100% reliable, usually when these are popped you will see the red line across them is black or broken.

There are 2 fuses on the inverter board. your meter will be able to check which is the bad one, My guess is that is the one that does not have the capacitor next to it. the fuses are small suface mount style.

Hey fuzzytek, can u take a picture of which fuses ur talking about? also is it always the fuses when the infamous vx900 turns on then off? could it be the capacitor?

I am using this great LCD for about an year. But few times in the past my LCD didnt show up the display though the Green light was still ON, turning off the LCD and opening it again always solved the problem. But now My LCD completely went blank. Turning off/on didnt work at all now. I've tried couple of other tweaks mentioned on this site but they didnt work. I am just seeing a blank screen with green light ON. and ya theres a very low hissing sound coming from the LCD.
