Hp-Compaq d530 Cd/Dvd bootup problem...

I can't figure this out for my life. I recently upgraded my bios to v2.43 for a new 3.2 Intel HT (Prescott) processor. I have 2.5g ram, 120g + 80g IDE and 500g SATA harddrives, Benq 1620 and HP 530r DVD\CDrom burners, with an AGP Nvidia 5200fx vid card and PCI Broadcom wireless NIC. Windows XP Pro was installed shortly prior to the upgrade. Now here's the fun part. Obviously, I booted up the cd to install XP. After the 3.2 processor upgrade and BIOS update I no longer can access either of the burners. I have tried numerous variations of one harddrive-one burner configs and dug through the shallow HP bios setup to no avail... Help.

p.s. By the way. The burners just don't spin up. They show up in the BIOS and XP as 'working'. I've tried new 80 cables and different power supply leads (ie. The working harddrive 12v's). I tried master-slave, standalone and cable select on each drive independently. Toast?

Thanks guys, but I obviously wasn't too clear. The two drives in question don't even spin to boot from. They flash and eject, but I can't get them to spin up at all, in or out of XP. I kinda wonder if it isn't the new cpu I put in. I only question that because I had downgraded the BIOS flash and no change to be found. Thanx.

Hello Mcs2315
Happy Holidays!
Well , it seem to be a problem with BIOS detection method, and type of drives you had. but yes, you can change for new ones, or go into SAFE MODE and uninstall the drives , and redetect when you up your PC on normal mode. if you have a particular drivers for them , install it at this point.
good luck

Go to control panel/system and uninstall your drives in question. Than from "action" tab, scan for changes. This will reinstall the drivers.

Upgrade of microprocessor

I reckon this upgrade is not possible because the m/b hardware doesn't support the SL7E6. It's not listed amongst the processors available for that model (highest speed one listed at 3.2GHz), and the specs imply that L2 cache must be 512MB or less. (This answer is not definitive)

The picture on my Compaq monitor shifted 1 inch to the left. There is a one inch black space on the right side. I have a HP Compaq d530 CMT

click menu button on monitor. you will see a series of Icons (or scroll through a series of Icons) and one will be a square with a smaller square inside it that is half inside the larger and half out. Navigate to that Icon. Use the + or - buttons to move the screen in either direction until it evens out. Use + or - button to navigate back to exit and and then press menu button to exit screen. Or, sometimes you simply push the menu button a second time. These 3 buttons will be on the bottom front of the monitor. Good luck

Processor Upgrade

did you reset the bios first. ? (id pull the coin cell)
you did all that backwards , the steps are.
1: read the HP service guide see all processors supported.
its a short list. its not like changing light bulbs.
2: the BIOS must support that precessor too.
3: the upgrade if possible , SEE?

d530 SFF, is a small form factor desktop.
it came with
Intel Pentium 4 2.8 GHz
my guess is you want the 3.3mHz version. ( a wasted effort and cash in my opinion the ,it is only fractionally faster, (go for 2 or 4 cores and win)
these old PC are mostly NOW scrapped, gone, nobody wants them.
for good reasons. (no support and no parts, and slow as slug)
worse is it runs XP the dead, now, virus magnet.
support at HP says.

HP COmpaq EVO Business D530

circa 2003, 14 years young?
some sold with Windows 2000. ! ouch and Mandrake 9.1 Linux - Light and OS/2...
specs. that matter
Intel 865G Chipset
800-MHz, 533-MHz or 400-MHz FSB (front side bus limits)
and the memory must match it. speed wise.

the parts surfer (HP ) shows it cam with 17 processor options.
sold newer, the full p/n in the service tag tells this.. not told by you.
some Celeron and other P4s.

the fastest one is, (HP P/N#)

Intel Pentium 4 processor - 3.20GHz (Northwood with Hyper-Threading, 800MHz front side bus, 512KB L2 cache, FCPGA2, Socket 478)

the problem with that is the BIOS, many times the newer faster
the hp support page is active.
the last BIOS update is for just this, processors

eg: BIOS 109
Updates Intel Pentium 4 Processor microcode for F41, F34, F29 and F49 steppings. (cupid app shows this)

getting the BIOS correct first is hard.. due to variances, in mobo
when PC boots, the BIOS scans many thing but CPU is #1
it scans it to see if it recognizes, it.
if it can not do that, (not in its old 2003 list) then it defaults to slowest CPU support, what else can it do?
the it sets up clock rates properly, this is super basics in PCs.
Then it scans the memory sticks to see if they can run at this clock rate, if not it goes to slow speeds. (what else can it do ?)
it will go to the slowest ram stick inserted. speeds.
or to slowest processors you have actual.

that is all.
