Problems installing new software

I purchased the new updates for my roadmate 700 but I can't load it. I am using windows XP sp2. When I plug the gps into my computer it is recognized as thales nav by my pc but when I try to install the software the software says it can't find the gps. I also tried using usb ports in the front and back of the pc and 2 different computers but had the same problem with both.

The buttons on my magellan are: option, view, locate, cancel, and enter. I checked all the buttons and I couldn't find anything that said menu. Could you be more specific where the menu is located? Thanks

Thanks everyone for trying to help. I sent it in today for magellan to install the software. It should be as easy to install as putting files on an mp player. I think magallen needs to work on making it more user friendly.

I have the same problem with tring to install the new version 6 for my Roadmate 700. Tried to installed to all my 3 computers with Windows XP SP2. All of the computers say "Roadmate 700/760 cannot be found". Service techs from Magellan say to try with several computers. They instructed me to turn off anti-virus, firewall, all other programs, etc. and I tried it on all 3 computers (2 desktops and 1 laptop). No luck.

What did you have to do for Magellan to install the software for you? Extra charges on top the software that cannot be instaled?

    Thanks for your input.

Success !! Yes... !! Use a different PC and the S/W will load. I had a problem getting my desktop to identify the GPS unit (700) as a UPS device. I tried connecting to my office laptop and the install program worked....

Write me for more details..:

I just had the same problem. Go to a command prompt and type chkdsk /f (drive letter) where drive letter is the letter assigned to your gps. When it tried to modify a folder to a file I said no and when it wanted to convert lost files into something??? I cant remember, I said no as well. It went thru the motions and repaired the drive. now my updates work.

Heres what to try. hook your gps up to computer, once it is reconized it should be seen as a removeble drive usally "F". your software should have ask you where you would like to place the file. place it in my documents or downloads or etc. then have your gps locate the file. one thing i need to know is what does your gps screen say once it is hooked up to the computer? this would help me understand what the misshap is!! you can also always goto the maggelln web site and download mapsend lite which is compatable with your system

I'm trying to install Magellan Roadmate 1470 on Windows Vista, and am totally lost! Any suggestions?

Hi there really isn't anything to install, register your GPS download the updated software I believe its version 2.2 for your model and CALL them within 30 days of purchase to see fi a map update is available.

  • If you wait till after the first 30 days you must buy any map updates.

When you connect the unit to your computer you can access the drive on it but its not like the TOMTOM's where it loads their software onto your computer.

there is no special software to install, but you must hook it to a computer running windowx xp sp2 or better. it will install automatically.

you can get your update version 1.56 HERE for your RoadMate 2000

I'm trying to update a Magellan map update on my 760

I think your problem is that you are using XP with SP 3, you cannot use anything more than XP SP2, so find yourself a friend that have an older operating system and update it. I bet you will not have any problem

Yes - bin the Magellan - I have a Roadmate 700 and just bought the updates but to get cameras loaded is a major hassle and Mag Support just do not respond... what a waste of money my Magellan has been, cost over £800!

Am now buying a Tomtom 720T with cameras preloaded - it does an auto update each time yu sit the unit in a cradle attached to your PC.

Road mate 700

The flash card hole is supposed to be empty - all you need should be on the hard disk BUT the first Roadmate 700 I purchased was empty i.e. no software loaded. The second failed due to bad power connection, the third worked but was factory refurbished! what a crass organisation Magellan is!!!

Try fiddling with the power connection that goes into the cradle that the unit sits on. The power connection is ultra sensitive. BUT, if you've only just bought the unit then you are in luck - return it and get your money - back Magellan Support is extremely poor.

I am binning my Roadmate and getting a Tomtom720 Go series with maps and cameras preloaded - it auto updates when it is on its cradle attached to my PC/internet.

Bin the Magella - 4 years of problems!!!!

Steve, In this case I would replace the Hard drive. But, since you probably don't have spare HDD's lying around.. do you atleast have the Software version? Some CD that came with it hopefully. If you do, then you may be able to stay alive here. Once your system boots to the user screen.. press + and repeat key at the same time.. "secret" menu now. ONLY IF YOU HAVE SOFTWARE TO INSTALL!! Select NAND FLASH FORMAT.. The unit will shut down after formatting. start up your software installer on computer. plug usb in.. and power on unit. This fix isn't %100, but it's the best shot you have. Otherwise you've gotta send it down here to Texas (where magellan repair is) and pay for the new hard drive. OR.. you could call customer service and see what they have to say. you'll probably be transferred to overseas.. --good luck with that -Dan
