Question about HP C7438A (Refurbished) DAT Tape Drive

1 Answer

Tape Drive Block Size

I am using HP C7438A to do my backup/restore job,
i am experienced slow restore process by using this drive,
which takes me 16 hours to complete the job, as i try the same task in another tape drive, it works fine and only takes me 2 hours to complete.
what i suspect to tune on is the block size of the tape drive,
i have checked, the HP C7438A has the following parameters
Min Block Size = 1B
Max Block size = 64KB
Default Block Size = 16KB
while the different brand tape drive has the following :
Min Block Size = 1B
Max Block size = 512KB
Default Block Size = 16KB

My question is, is it possible to set the max block size of this tape drive in order to enhance the performance?

Bit of an odd one but i agree that block size could cause an issue.

Try this link for the HP tech manual for this drive.

http://www.tag.com/tech%20support/System%20Resources/Drivers%20&%20Utilities/Drivers/Current/7.2/HP%20DAT%20Storage%20Works/guides/unix.pdf

It may help with your issue and does detail block size changes on some systems.

Backup tape(RDX) getting ejected automatically after sometime while backup job is not running.

RDX tape drives, by HP (tandenberg)
did you reload all that HP software and drivers fresh?
did you try fresh tape.
i replace the tape drive, (new , used, NOS , from whom, ebay)

i bet the tape drive, logs errors, if you look,
the driver software will log that, and you can see why the tape
failed, my guess, damage to the tape, end to end.
try fresh new tape, NEW in a box, not used.

HP C7438A, tape drive doesnt compress data

Several things might cause this.

1st off is that your drive will only compress if the backup software tells it to - so ensure your software is asking the drive to compress.

There is also a dip switch on the bottom of the drive that will disable compression - i think it it switch 3 on the underside of the drive on the main pcb

I HAVE A ULTRIUM TAPE DRIVE 920 IT ALWAYS ASK ME TO OVERWRITE THE TAPE BUT THE TAPE IS NOT YET FULL WHEN IT REACH THE CAPCITY OF 300GB, IT ASK ME TO OVERWRITE THE TAPE???? CAN YOU HELP WITH MY PROBLEM

it asking you to overwrite because that is how you set up the backup job. Setup a new backup job using append instead of normal backup and the message will go away. Its not problem its a feature to prevent you from overwriting data.

/dev/st0: Cannot open: Input/output error

Just the fact that /dev/st0 exists indicates that the OS sees the tape drive. When you say you are "moving the data to tape drive" just how are you doing this? Have you read the dump man page?

Tape drive does not recognize or eject tape

Yeah the Ultrium 4 tape drives only r/w to ULT3 and ULT4 tapes.

We put a Ultrium 2 tape in our 4 drive and it seems to be locked permanently.
