I received the 80010514 error over a month ago and was able to fix the problem by replacing the Blu-ray diode. It started while I was playing COD MW2. The game would freeze after a multiplayer match and I could not eject the disc without first turning off the PS3 using the switch on the back. I was able to play everything on my hard drive, but no Blu-ray games or movies. Before replacing the laser I was able to "rebuild the file structure" and this would allow the PS3 to recognize the disc again and I could play an online match. It would freeze in the same spot every time. I used the instructions from the Blu-ray.com thread entitled (Un-Official) PS3 Laser Replacement Manual & Video (Google it). The repair wasn't extremely difficult, but it wasn't easy. You can get it done at a local repair shop for around $100 (I paid $50 for the laser alone). I hope this helps.

I recently had the dreaded error and phoned sony(uk) who wanted me to pay £150 for a replacement as my warranty had expired (ps3 is 15months old). Researched some consumer laws which point out that goods should last a reasonable time, i then phoned sony and asked if they didnt expect their ps3s to last longer than 15 months and pointed out the "sales of goods act". Sure enough they soon sorted it out at no cost to me. My advice if you have problems with your ps3 and like me yours is out of warranty, read consumer laws relevent to your country and then point these out to sony. YOU HAVE RIGHTS SO USE THEM. GOOD LUCK.

If your PS3 is reading DVD's and CD's, but NOT any type of BLUE-RAY media.....95% sure it's a faulty laser. The Backwards compatible units are equipped with a RED laser for DVD and CD reading. The Blue Ray Diodes are faulty..especially in the earlier production models. This was due to the shortage of parts during production, so SONY out sourced from multiple producers of BR laser units.

My 80gb , 4 usb, Backwards combatibility unit started doing this. The game froze, system became unresponsive, wouldn't show the the Disc ICON in the XMB for PS3 games. When the games did load they would play for a few mins then freeze, or error code 80010514 would appear.

I got the laser replaced by a reputable repairman, now the system works without fault. It's been running for hours with no problems.

Get the lens replaced by either SONY or someone who knows what they are doing....also give your PS3 a good dusting everyday. When the Laser unit gets too hot the diodes malfuction and eventually fail.

Two things it could be. Either corrupted disc (formatting will not help this since it's caused by moving the unit while running, damaging the disc and not corrupting files) or your BRD is malfunctioning. If it is only on games and not on movies, I would say it's the HDD, if it's on everything, then the BRD. You can get repair parts on Ebay for the BRD by punching in KES-400AAA and it takes about 15 min. for an expert and about an hour and a half for a newbie to replace. Good luck.

I have just encountered the 8001514 error, and it's aggravating as heck... As someone mentioned ( Sparky Boi) the heat the machine was putting off seemed a bit too much. Mine too worked for a 1/2 hour or so once I unplugged everything and let it cool... once it heated up again, the sound went, and eventuallly the screen went black.. I recall seeing in the PlayStaion Shop a "add-on" fan unit... could it be they didn't think people would play for hours on end?? Also, instead of turning the unit to stanby with the remote..turn it completely off with the toggle... I may buy the fan unit...if it solves the problem....I'll be back to let you know....if not Sony will get a call....

- I have a small fan cooling the system as I play... only works for about a half hour...then dies..... sending the f'er back !!

- 80010514... yeah I called sony usa... biotch was so rude I hung up... I'm out of warranty by four months and she could give a rats ***.... $159.00 for repair or replacement..when I called back..much better service.... stilll A**holes...but got $10 bucks off Whoo hoo!! these people know there are problems, they friggin name them... so why should we pay out the nose for something that should work for more than 14 months !!

FYI.....I would like to know if anyone has gotten free service after warranty has expired, because I would like to sue these bastards and spread some wealth!!

I called Sony this morning with the same error code (80010514).

She had me go into the start up menu...go into settings...go into the 1080P link which is the 5th link up from the bottom. She then had me toggle the setting from "automatic" to "off ".

The PS3 started working right away.

She said the PS3 was trying to establish what kind of TV I was using. I just recently changed TV's last week.

Hope this helps.

For those of you who are out of warranty remember...if you made your purchase with a credit card you may still be covered. My Visa automatically doubles any manufacture warranty. This is true with washers / dryers / even PS3's...

Hope this helps as well.

I was also going through the same issue, but lucky me, it was just on one game. I tried everything that others have said, but none have say to buy the same game. So I tested my theory on that and it worked. I was just my old disk was jack and don't know how that is possible. Its cheaper and least time constraint :D

This is not a Laser issue as some have suggested, I phoned Sony told them the problem and they have exchanged my PS3. They are fully aware of the issue and shouldn't charge you just too look at it.

Same problem with error code 80010514. The console is only 2 months old with the latest patch 2.01. Normal DVD's, Playstation 2 games and audio CD's will all play, but any Blu-Ray media will not. This is NOT specific to Call Of Duty 4 or any one game (read a lot of posts to that regard.)

Resetting the machine to factory defaults per Sony phone support does not fix the problem.

I flat out asked the technician if they received a lot of calls on this error code, and the reluctant admission was yes, without any further explanation.... (although I did hear him mumble something about a laser issue in regards to the blu ray drive....)

The solution, as aggravating as it is, seems to be contacting Sony either via their website or their help line (Phone Number
1-800-345-SONY (7669))
to request the materials to send the PS3 back to them for replacement or repair.

Note: on the help line, 0 will bring you to live customer support once you have keyed in your hardware platform and preliminary problem.

5 days to receive to the packaging materials and then 10-14 days to receive a new unit upon their receipt of the old unit.

Here is list of what you need before you send your unit in:

http://www.us.playstation.com/whattosend/ps3/default.html

Hope this saves you some time that I wasted......or maybe they'll push out another firmware patch to correct the issue before I have to ship it back.

I was given a PS3 60gb for my birthday last November. Last week I had exactly the same problem and when I read this website I thought I'd had it. My Dad bought it at Game and they said they would exchange it for a 40gb - but I wanted a 60gb.

Game gave us the telephone number of Sony's Playstation Care Line - and they are sending me a new console this week. All we needed to do was to fax them a copy of the receipt as proof of purchase and they are doing the rest. A new 60gb console will be delivered to my door at a time which we chose.

As long as you got your PS3 from a reputable dealer there shouldn't be a problem. Just phone 0870 5998877. When you call them they will ask for the seriel number off the back of the PS3 - this is to make sure that you are a genuine claimer.

This is valid if you live in UK - if you live elsewhere, Im sure there is a number for you to call. It will be in the online manual - or just ask your dealer.

In case you think I work for Sony or something - Idon't - I just want you guys to get your PS3.

AS I READ ALL THE PROBLEMS OCCURING ABOUT CODE 80010514, AND THER ARE SEVERAL PROBLEMS TO IT. I BOUGHT A 40GB PS3 BEFORE X-MAS 2007 WITH 2 CONTROLLERS AND 1 GAME WICH WAS SMACKDOWN VS RAW 2008. THE GAME AND THE PS3 SYSTEM WAS GOING WELL. UNTIL LAST WEEK. THE GAME FROZE. I RESTARTED IT AGAIN AND IT WORK AND THEN FROZED AGAIN. HOWEVER BEFORE THE GAME FROZED I WAS PLAYING IT FOR SEVERAL HOURS. SO I THEN TURNED THE PS3 SYSTEM OFF AND UNPLUGED ALL THE WIRES OFF. AS I BEGAN TO FEEL THE BACK OF THE PS3 I CAN FEEL THE HEAT AT THE BACK, ITS AS HOT AS AN OVEN. I CAN FEEL HOT AIR COMING OUT THE BACK OF THE PS3. SO I THEN THOUGHT TO MYSELF THAT THE PS3 WAS SYSTEM WAS OVERHEATED. SO I THEN GOT A FAN AND PLACED IT AT THE BACK OF MY PS3 AND COOLED IT DOWN. I LEFT IT FOR 2 COMPLETE DAYS WITHOUT PLAYING IT. 2 DAYS LATER, AS I TURNED ON GAME, THE GAME WAS FUNCTIONING WELL. NOTHING FROZE AND IT WAS GOING GOOD. SO TO ALL THESE PEOPLE HAVING TROUBLE JUST MAKE SURE THAT AFTER PLAYING WITH THE PS3 MAKE JUST YOU TURN OFF THE MAIN SWITCH AT THE BACK AND DISCONNECT THE WIRES FROM THE BACK AND MAKE SURE THAT YOUR PS3 IS SOMEWHERE IN A COOL PLACE. WELL I HOPE YOUR PS3 GOES ALL GOOD AND I HOPE THIS SOLUTION WORKS TO YOU GUYS.

well, i went where i bought it and i said them to change it at once.. so they tested the playstation and they gave me a new one, that so far.. it works... playstation has a garantee of 1 year.. so to u all ... you'd do better if you change your ps by the garantee and forget to "fix" this problem.. waiting for the 2.20 or whatelse...
happy new year and excuse me for my dreary english of today XD
(see you as soon as my new ps re-do the same thing... )
byeeeeee

My son's just did this today. The game froze, now it won't read any games, DVD's or CD's. I called Sony's helpline after visiting their forums and observing the bashing the guy above talked about. I got the voice prompt that said to clean the disc. DUH! I waited for an operator, and a message came on stating" due to high demand we can not take your call right now" and it hung up on me!!!! We've only had this for 5 days and we had a family night of playing games planned for our New Year's Eve. I am so pissed right now! I can't even take it back to Circuit City because we sent in the UPC code from the box to get the 5 free Blu-Ray movies.

Hey all, Just wanted to give some input . I had my game for almost a year before i decide to go online with it. I was told that a wired concetion would be the best. So after play for about a day 1/2. I was getting stuck while playing .I would turn system off and let it power cycle for 1/2 hour. And that seemed to work. After that when I decide to play again i started getting error codes. Again i would power cycle everything(modem, rotor and the ps3). I had a friend do some reach on this error code 80010514 this code can be  a few problem, 1. dirty blue-ray lens 2.can't read disc. So i did what sony told me to do to correct the problem. It work for like 20 mins and i got the code again and again. Now my system is no longer reading any disc. I have been on the posted messages on the ps3 blog sites and people are telling that i have to pay $150 for a flaw in sonys ps3 systems. This doesn't seem fair that we have to fix problem that sony is well aware that they have made a faulty system. I feel that sony should of had a recall on all systems. Right now I am in the process of restoring my system. I am keeping my fingers cross that this will correct the error code. If anyone has any other input on this error code please let me know. Oh by the way my friend found the email address on the CEO of sony so here it is howard.stringer@am.sony.com . I have emailed him and waiting to here back. Sony needs to step up to plate and own up to that they made a faulty system .

ya so i was playing ncaa football when the game froze and so i restarted it and the playstation said there was no game in the machine so i ejected the disc and put back in and tried some other games and now it wont read and of my discs and if it does read a disc when it starts i get the code.

Comment by Guest, posted on Jan 09, 2009

when i insert a none bluray disk it works perfectly, but when i insert any of my games they don't load on the menu. It started when one of my games froze so i turned of the system and reset it all. IT STILL DOESN'T WORK! and i need help.

Comment by BossPlaya17, posted on Jan 09, 2009

You may be right, the system could be overheating. But, when I tried inserting a none blu-ray disc it worked prefectly. So, I bet that the bly-ray reader is the one that's broken. I've also read that once you get that error code message you'll never be able to play games again. I think that this problem sucks and that Sony should be ashamed. I payed 800 dollars for my PS3 and after a year without any problems this happens. It's so damn frustrating.

Comment by Guest, posted on Jan 09, 2009

I have the same problem, i was playin COD5 online and it would freeze inbetween loading the game, ending the game goining into the lobby again, and then i wouldnt read the disk, then it wouldnt eject the disc, im sure u have the same problem, i did have it in the entertainment thinger, so it prob was overheating in there, then i moved it next to the fire place a little cooler, but once i started the fire it started doing the same thing, it might be overheating, but idk, if it dose it agian im going to take it back to best buy for a new one becaus it has never done this before untill now.....it could be overheating or something else....let me know if yours prob was overheating as well due to bad air circulation....

Comment by BossPlaya17, posted on Jan 09, 2009

What's up guys? I have the same problem as you. I was trying to finish GTA IV to a 100% when suddenly the game just froze. I got the now so called "code of death" error. Luckily I don't have to pay anything to get my PS3 fixed. If they can't fix it, I'll be getting a brand new PS3 (fingers crossed). But I have to say I feel really bad for those who have to pay so much to get it fixed. Bad SONY!

Ive been doin a lil research on error 80010514 and it seems that everyone was online when this occured but not me i was just playiin my madden franchise with my buddy and the system froze so i restarted it 30 min later it froze again then i went through it reading and not reading, reading and not loading etc. I left it sit and cool down thinkin it was an overheating issue, so this morning i jumped on NHL 09 and it worked perfect for and hour then same issues re occured, i did update home the other day so maybe it is all firmware issues, my system is out of warranty and im not payin 150 for them just to look at it, ive got connections so i should be able to get my system replaced at the video game store i worked at, at any rate i jsut want everyone to be aware its not just being online, and apparently this is a rare issue so dont hate sony just dont be heading to the casino anytime soon as apparently we are the unlucky bunch.

I have had our PS3 for over a year by a couple of weeks. I had pretty much the same problem after update while trying to download Call of Duty World a War. I called and they told me that I would have to pay 150.00 to get it fixed. I have the same error code 80010514. This sounds like a defect issue and I do not feel like I should have to pay for an issue that everybody else is having. I have also tried everything (and I mean everything), but still freezes.

if your out of warranty, then I'm sorry to say your
Sh*t out of luck. Called Sony yesterday, actually spoke to a younger guy who was very nice and easy to deal with. (I was shocked also..) I'm close to a week out of warranty, with the ps3 being a year old. Proof of purchase, which i don't have, is irrelevant since I'm out of warranty.
I explain to the guy, due to it being Sony's faulty hardware. Why, after spending $400 plus dollars for a system, not to mention the money i spent on controller's, composite cables, HDMI cable, Games and PSN content, I should have to shell out another $150 bucks at least to have it fixed or replaced. I also mentioned that Sony must know about this issue, since so many people are dealing with it. His responce was "You can't believe everything people say on fourms... "(no sh*t kid) He then proceeded to tell me how his 60g had the same issue, which resulted in him having to pay to get it fixed.
I then give him my whole Xbox story and how they owned up to their mistake, extended the warranty, hooked me up with some M$ points, and had it back to me very quickly!.. All at their expanse!
At this point the situation is going nowhere. I give him the whole im gonna dispute blah..blah..blah.. It's at that point he says " I'm gonna be honest with you. People call everyday trying to dispute and nothing happens. It's Sony's policy! " Even he said how messed up it was. I tell the kid he was lucky. Because if I had to deal with some jack a$$, rather then him, I most likely would have made them cry.. I was Pissed! He gives me all the info, where to fill out the fourms, and for those of you out of warranty and don't have some sort of credit card, Good Luck.. Unless you submit that info, No Box which in return means... No Fix! So to all with this issue, I feel your pain! Sorry for the book..
(oh yea... for the record, the guy i spoke to @ Sony was very kind and professional. Also just so its clear, I maintained my PS3 as if it were a diamond. I took care of it!) K all done

Sony piece of ****. $150 to fix a known issue. I'm very much in favor of a class action lawsuit.

Total rip off that this piece of **** failed. And it cost me over $600!!

FarCry 2 froze in the middle of the game, after rebooting I couldn't start any Blue-Ray games. Ran the PS3 Recovery, games started fine while I was offline, but after enabling the network connection I can no longer play any Blue-Ray games, same error (80010514). I am 8 days out of my extended warranty (pbt).

Seens like playstations are alaways breakin. Just like the freakin ps2 had a lot of prolbems. The system is so dam expensive people shouldnt have to pay because the freakin disc reader is flawed.seems to me like the ps3 is having a lot of prolbems like ps2. As far as reformating the system goes i wouldnt even bother.I think a couple of people in this blog said they did that and it worked. I dont know how it could have. If the system does not read disc it cant be a file formating error unless maybe u have downloaded stuff online thus giving u some sort of spyware to make ur system malfunction wich seems highly unlikely seing how the ps3 should be like a mac when it comes to spyware. It seems to me like the prolbem could only be in the system hardware obviously the disc reading device. It would be my best educated guess that the ps3 does have a good cooling unit because it has air vents on 3 sides and the fan inside the console really cranks. How ever the ps3 really produces some heat.My system started malfunctioning on me and sony wants 150 bucks to service it.for all i know they are just going to replace a 20 dollor componet i could buy at a ps3 dealer and repair it myself. not to mention how r they going to charge 150 bucks when they dont even know what the prolbem is. one guys ps3 may need 5 new parts when mine may only need 1 and we both have to pay 150bucks!!!!!!!!! after paying 600 bucks for the system(i got a 80 gig thats why it costs so much.) My system went out when i accidently left it on for 3 hours in my entertainement center. i also had the doors closed to the entertainment center so it was like a heat box in that thing. i came home and tried to play when the system froze on me. I opened the doors to the enmtertainment center and felt the system .It was hoter then hell.I shut it dont let it cooled off and now everything works execpt it wont play games. The game icon never even pops up under the game section. I tried a music cd and it didnt work either.Didnt have a dvd layin around so i havent tried that. My advice to anyone reading this whos console still works to keep a fan on ur console and fiel the system after every hour of playing.if it feels really hot shut it down. if it feels warm ur ok its suppost to feel warm and even a little hot but if it is getin extremly hot shut it down save urself 150bucks.Those fan packs prolly help but my friend has one and told me it keeps his system cool but if u play online u cant have the fan pack hooked up with an either net cable becuase the fan unit blocks the eithernet port there is no slot in the fan unit for it. JUST had it happen to us. had the ps3 with COD-4 for a year with no problems. 2 weeks ago, my brother pre-ordered COD-5 and it was still fine. 2 days after warranty, this particular error started occuring. my brother asked the technician and she said the same thing as the "best answer". just have them send you the packaging to return it, send it back, and wait with hopes it works and doesn't poop out on you again.

I was playing COD WAW and my PS3 that i bought 14 months ago froze up. I restarted the game and i got error 80010514. I restored the system and any BRDVD,DVD or game disc i put in the console freezes and comes up with this error. I called Sony and they told me I would have to send it in to be repaired which would cost me $150.00. I payed $500.00 for my 60GB PS3 just over 1 year ago and now like many others I am getting screwed out of $150.00 by Sony.

same as everyone else. frozen pizza. easy fix=call sony and have them ship you a box so you can send them your ps3. they will fix, or replace, your system FREE. ( providing you have your reciept and are still under warranty). you will get your system back in about 10 days. if you are out of the warranty period or lost your reciept it will set you back about $150. also my ps3 is the 80gig that kept freezing-up on GTA4.

Just after the latest firmware release was put on I started having problems with games stopping in the middle. After a few more re-boots, I got the dreaded error code 80010514 which is (after reading several comments) a blue-ray disc error. Will be calling Sony.

I tried everything. I did a full reformat which took nearly 5 hours. That didn't work. I then went to GameStop to buy a DVD Lens Cleaner, which cost me $10.81, still didn't fix the problem. I think the best way to resolve this problem is to send it back to sony for another ps3. On a side note, I did some research and it said that the error code 80010514 happens frequently to the 80gb.

i have the same problem, my ps3 is a 60 gb european unit (pal)... i started having this problem for the past 2 weeks and it is really annoying... tried to use the ps3 upright to reduce the overheating issue but without any luck... sometimes the system crashes after only 15 mins of play, sometimes after 2 hrs but i consistently keep on experiencing these crashes and the error code...

i do not think that this is an overheating issue though...

Comment by Topcat612, posted on Jan 29, 2008

I am having the exact same problem. PS2 games and std DVD movies play but no blue-ray discs. I have tried everything listed here like restarting and formatting the unit, no luck. I s/w Sony and they said I need to return the unit and they will replace it @ no cost w/a new 1 year warr from when I rec the new unit. They are sending me the packaging to return the unit. If there is any fix besides returning the unit I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Comment by Guest, posted on Jan 23, 2008

I would love to know how many people are having this problem! I am in the exchange process right now with Sony because of the infamous 80010514 code which by the way is not very easy to do because contacting them online seems to be impossible and contacting them by phone is next to impossible. Maybe I am being a cry baby because I can't live without my Warhawk and COD4! (although my wife is happier)

I keep getting an 80010514 error code when i try to play games. I've tried to restore all the settings and it didnt work. Now no matter how clean or new the games are they still dont work.

Comment by Guest, posted on Dec 22, 2007

yes the error code 800010514 i got it and it drives me crazy, lol. It seems that its some kind of corruption in the start up operation. There is no fix, but only to call sony and replace it, but the thing is they clam that they (when called) that they are unaware of that error code. however from searching on the web it seems to be a massive problem. Tried to post on the ps forum but just got bashed, my thought are that they are payed to monitor the forums posing as gamers to discourage those who have negative feed back on the operations of the system. ps3 xbox are in the same both, evolving their systems as they go along is not a good idea when mass errors occur, to many patches= errors
