When in "expert" mode my Escort 8500 Blue goes through its initial test and anywhere from 30 seconds to a minutelater, X-band will go off, then K-Band, then Ka-band, then POP, then Laser. All intermittent, same time and some in between. Basically the detector looks like its decorated with christmas lights.

This goes on and on until the device "warms up." This is my second detector. My first was still under warranty with Best Buy. The sales person told me another person had the same problem.

I thought it was a fluke.

Nope, second one started with a month before my warranty expired. Sent it in and they replaced the antenna. Ten months later and its crapped out again.

When it first starts happening, its frequency is short and usually clears itself out. As time passes, these false signals can last for 40 or more minutes - perhaps never clearing out.

-   Purchasedmy 8500 online 11/06. It's been great up until the last 6 months or so. It's gotten progressively worse at false alerts, always K or Ka band. It used to only do it for the first few minutes and seemed to quiet down once it warmed up. Now it's almost constant and makes the unit unusable. I'm a professional courier and run 10K miles a month, so I need to get the problem solved. Will Escort work on a unit that is out of warranty for a reasonable charge? Don't want to spend another $300 on a new one.-   talldave

-   Same problem--usually on Ka, sometimes on K. Seems to be worse when it is warm or hot outside, but not always.-   Guest

-   I bought my 8500 X50 two weeks ago and now I have the same problem. My alarm will go full signal x or ka band off and on constantly for no reason. I was thinking that it was cause from the cold weather because it mainly does it in the morning (when I need it most) but becomes less of a problem after the heater warms the car up and by then I'm already at work. The thing is that it doesnt really get cold here in San Antonio, TX and it's March!

I'm going to exchange mine to see if I just got a defect. If I still have problems, I'm going to another brand like beltronics or gonna go back to Cobra which is way cheaper and more reliable then the experience I'm having with the X50.-   Crazybrat

Your Garage door remote control uses X-band so when you are in garage and trying to open the door it'll detect X-band.

Got to the bottom of my false alarming situation. I finally called Escort and discussed the behavior with the technician who immediately concluded the antenna was failling and needed a repair. $30 worth of shipping and about a week later I got my repaired unit back and it works perfectly. Not sure the root cause but I am going to treat it as gently as possible and hope it keeps working, I sure like it better than the V1.

After I exchange the detector for a new one I thought everything was fine until a about 4 months later when I started having the same problems again. I guess passports only work great for about 5-6 months and then must be repair or replaced. The price leads you to expect a high quality product but it's probably high because they pay people to lie about how great their passport is.

I gave beltronics a shot and now I wish I bought one a long time ago.

I exchanged it like I said I would and the new one works great with no problems! The first one must have been a defect.

That will likely not be the solution. Mine is doing the same thing...except in Laser Radar. My 8500 worked great for 14 months but now will sound out a full alert in Laser and I can assure you, there is no Laser at all in the vicinity.

Unit will go to full alarm for no obvious reason, sometimes in my garage or neighborhood where normally there is no radar threat. Usually on x band although has been in KA, POP and LASER a few times too. Sometimes it will repeat over and over until I power cycle the unit, which sometimes fixes it and sometimes doesn't. Unit will work fine for a few months then mis-alarm everyday for a week. Hard to get a handle on what is at the root cause, doesn't seem to be temperature related and I drive pretty much the exact same route to work and home each day.
