I have an HP pavilion running Vista. This is the second time this problem has surfaced. For some reason, when I hit the spacebar, the message on the monitor says "monitor going to sleep" and the system goes to sleep. So, any typing I do (in Word for example) with a space puts the system to sleep, and the machine is useless. The first time, the HP Techs took the machine and simple wiped it clean and re-installed system. Obviously, I need to find root cause. Webroot shows no viruses.
Is this a driver issue? Is it a keyboard mapping issue? Graphics card issue? Or something else?
1) Navigate to the 'Power Options' (Start Search powercfg.cpl)
2) Select your power plan.
3) Click: Change plan settings.
4) Crucial Link: Change advanced powers settings
5) Research the Aladdin's cave of settings, in particular: 'Sleep'
6) Expand: Sleep after. If it's a laptop check both the 'Plugged in' and the 'On Battery' settings.
7) Choose: 'Never' to prevent your computer going into sleep mode.
8) Remember to click 'OK'. (Or apply if you want to configure more options.)

No I did not. How do I check the shortcut keys? Where are they set? How do I reset them?
Did you check the shortcut keys for sleep mode. May be the spacebar key defined over there causing your system to go into sleep mode as you press space bar key....
