GE JVM1850CH06 microwave no heat with loud humming sound

Our GE, jvm1850ch06 microwave worked fine last evening but this morning it has a loud humming sound and will not heat at any setting. Any suggestions? The unit was installed 3 years ago. Thanks.

Is this something better left to an expert? I'm somewhat handy but not familiar with electronic type repairs.

Even so, would it be worth repairing?

    Thanks.

Sound #2 and #3 are still too soft.

With the details you described, the high voltage diode might be shorted( usually HVR 1X). It is connected from the Capacitor and the chassis, or else the capacitor is the one at fault, but not common .

Yup! that needs an extra knowledge in technicalities, you must know how to open the unit and to check the parts, actually no need for soldering, they are just socket type and screws. If that was here in the Philippines that will cost you about 20$.That helps?

GE microwave JE1660WB001 does not heat makes humming sound

The magnetron has gone and is the heart of the microwave oven, this part is the most expensive to replace, cheaper to buy new in the long run.

Jvm1790sk01 GE Microwave Broken - Manufactured Aug 2005. Working fine until tonight. Loud vibrating humming sound coming from Right Side and Burning Odor... No heating on high power. Just burning odor. ...

Sounds like you Magnetron has failed. The only way to repair this is to replace the part. Some microwaves have an extended warranty on this part. Check your manual and Call GE for service if it does. If the warranty has expired you might as well buy a new microwave unless you are very attached to this one. Hope this helps

Runs but has loud humming sound. Does not heat. Turntable, timer and lights work.

The diode that connects to the capacitor needs to be replaced. Once its replaced microwave will begin to heat again. (If it wasn't heating and wasn't making a humming noise, then your magnetron would need to be replaced). If you are thinking of doing it yourself and need instructions, i'll be glad to help.

I have a GE Spacemaker Model JVM16400BB004 over the counter microwave, that was working fine last night turn it on this morning and it lights up and the turnatable goes around and sounds just like it use...

A loud buzz, hum, or groan is usually a shorted high voltage rectifier diode, but a sound like gurgling into an empty coffee mug is one symptom of a failed magnetron, and yet the mag can be bad without that sound.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use (in order given) for test help, but read the safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it is NOT shorted or burned looking, it's probably fine)

(continuity can be good even though mag is bad!)

GE Microwave worked fine last night. This morning it won't heat at all. Makes a loud humming sound when turned on, everything else seems fine..?

With the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron.

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

(if it's not shorted, it's probably okay)

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting2.gif, testing, and locating components.

I have a GE JVM1850CH06 over the stove microwave. It works fine; however, it sometimes has a loud noise that sounds like a vibration or a bearing going out. Checked in the top part for anything loose, but...

It may be a louver or the problem might be the hood vent exhaust fan.

Also on those models, electrolytic capacitors sometimes fail on the control circuit board, leading to humming and chattering of relays, etc.

We regularly repair these control units for customers nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in about a week with a one-year guarantee.

If you have trouble with your exhaust fan or cooktop lights, please have it repaired right away so the problem doesn't cascade on you.

Feel free to contact me directly (and please remind me of your full model number) for more information & help.

Loud humming/no heating

Word has it that many of these models have a defect which causes the microwave energy to be reflected back to the magnetron, causing damage to the magnetron, and eventually damaging the high-voltage diode too. Also, the fuse or the magnetron theral cutout / thermostat can eventually blow, too. There is a replacement magnetron and stirrer kit available. I would definitely call the GE Answer Center at 800-626-2005 about this. It's not considered a recall, but a "campaign". They may pick up part of the cost. It's not cheap.
