Well, if the light on the monitor won't come on when it is plugged in to power and you have the power button on, it's probably dead. Otherwise, you may have a loose cable at the monitor or in back of the PC.

Otherwise, I would totally suggest upgrading to a bigger monitor. Your monitor at 15" diagonal and 1024x768 is rather small for desktops today. You can get a decent 17" or 19" LCD for under $100.

Newegg has a 18.5" diagonal for $99.99 with free shipping.

Most monitors have a power light. When you first plug in the monitor to power, the light will come on in an active state, but will usually change color when no input / video is detected.

Some things to check:
1) Look for any kind of light when you plug it in.
2) If no signs of life from above, double check the power supply. Make sure the monitor side of the cord is plugged in. If it seems to be a bit loose, the jack may be loose from the circuit board.
3) Check the AC cord going to the power supply. Make sure it isn't unplugged, and that the power strip it is plugged into is turned on. You would be surprised....

If your power cord goes straight from AC to the monitor (no box in between), then try swapping the power cord from your computer to the back of the monitor. If it works then, you may have a bad power cord (easily replaced).

4) If you have another monitor, connect it to the computer. If this monitor shows signs of life, like an image as computer starts, then it may be safe to assume that the other monitor is bad if power cord / power supply is in good shape, and the "bad" monitor is reconnected and appears to be dead again.

5) There is a small chance that the power supply, if used, has become defective / damaged. If the monitor is not very old, and the retailer you bought it from still has the demo model, take your monitor to the retailer and ask them to plug it into the power supply of the demo unit.

If still doesn't work, then contact Samsung for warranty / out of warranty repair. 15" LCD monitors are pretty cheap now, you may find that replacement is much cheaper than repair.

Generally, if the power light (LED) doesn't come on and there is no screen display with or without input signal, it's dead. Probably a failed power supply.

My hp monitor is totally black it was working last night. i tried to unplug and replug it in and it came on for a few seconds then went black again

A lot of time people have the impression that the monitor is not working when in fact the computer is not booting its lighting up but nothing else so its stays on a black screen.

One way to know is by opening your speakers or plugging head phones, if you hear windows open or any windows sound the problem is the screen.

You can also unplug the screen from the pc and turn the screen on most of the time the screen while show a disconnected warning on the screen if that comes up the computer is defective.

Dell 1800fp dead

Each monitor has a different response to "no activity" from the system. So for the monitor, if you get a chance, try your monitor on another machine that you know does function. At work, neighbour, or other.

For the computer, does the it (beep) or POST (Power On Selft Test) when you turn it on, do you see and hear what you would if the monitor was connected?

If it sounds normal, then everything should be fine and luck might have it, your backup monitor is not working either, try another one from the same friend or neighbour above.

If it doesn't POST, you could have a video or other card or ribbon connection loose in the computer. Either you or a friend, or the service center, whichever feels comfortable reseating all the external and internal equipment, bearing in mind static electricity and proper handling measures for the computer.

Monitor dead

Check your power cables properly and make sure it is attached. Check your power button, maybe you have pressed the wrong one.

My monitor doesn't display anything, though it's receiving input from the CPU. I know that input is being received because the monitor status light is green, and times out (turns orange).

Same thing happened to me! Went to bed last night, everything was fine. Woke up today, orange light came on, no display, slight flickering seen, but that's it. Cables and cords are fine, tried unplugging and plugging it back in, NOTHING. Totally dead. I'm guess off to buy a new one today. Typical made-in-China JUNK.

Monitor is totally dead

Through my past experience I mwould remove the solder point at the input power B+ line to primary winding FBT. If the HOT has shorted there will be no power.Straight to the point if you know where the HOT is , you can desolder the middle pin or collector of the HOT transistor. If you desolder the pin which result the power led light turn up. That indicates either FBT or HOT has shorted

Flickeing like a dying fluorescent light bulb

Actually this is a 'warning' signal from your lcd monitor. The problem is your lcd ccfl lamp are near to their life, need to change. The ccfl lamp like our home fluorescent lamp, when the lamp need to dead, the lamp will flickering first, after some time, will totally off(dead). So, this is a signal for you. Some lcd monitor, when their inverter board are using fairchild inverter ic(oz series), will easily shutdown your monitor when they detected some flickering on your screen (ccfl lamp). Samsung SyncMaster 191T

You have either a bad inverter board or burned out backlight fluorescent bulb. Very common on this monitor.
