1 Answer

Display WOW u will never solve this Display went bad  (Vertical stripe appeared)  Compaq fixed it,,,  Next a hot spot (Very Hot) appeared in lower RH corner causing a black aura type spot.  Out of warrenty now  so i used it as a desktop with a external mouse keyboard and monitor.  This worked fine for a few months now the external monitor shuts off after windows starts on the R4000,,,,, Fn F4 does nothing,,  trying to use the original restore disk dont work as it still blacks out.  The monitor is fine as i reconnected it to a regular desktop and it checks out ok.

Check the cables. It might be overly simplistic, but if your monitor is connected via a serial cable, one of the pins might be bent or missing. This can cause slight display problems, including a vertical line. If you are using a USB, try another cable and see if the problem persists. Update your video card driver. Some discrete cards have an update feature in the properties window for the device. Right-click on your video card in the programs list, and select "Properties." The update will be a button under the "Drivers" tab if your device is so equipped. If not, visit the manufacturer's website and search for the most current driver for your model number.
Updated video drivers could solve the problem. Place a box fan directly behind your computers intake vent for extra cooling. Sometimes if there are system problems, your components can run too hot. If cooling the computer takes away the line, you know have you an overheating problem, not a monitor problem. You might try cleaning the internals with canned air. Remove the housing, and thoroughly blow any dust, hair or carpet fiber away from the fan and off the mother board. While you're there, you can check to see if there are any obvious loose connections. Connect the monitor to another computer if you have one available. This is probably the most definitive test of your monitor's health. If you have a line when the monitor is connected to a different machine, it's likely time for a new monitor. As frustrating as it sounds, taking apart one of today's monitors in an attempt to repair it is more expensive than buying a replacement. If you don't have another computer available, try shutting down the computer but leave the power on to the monitor. Using the buttons on the monitor bezel (if you have them), call up the settings. If the line appears in the menu just as it did in the video from your computer, then you definitely have a monitor problem. Replacement is probably in order

My Compaq presario CQ42 has a white-red thin line at the right corner of the screen. Is it a problem to use the laptop with it before I fix it.

If you see a Vertical/Horizontal colored lines on your LCD, that means either the Video Card, LCD, or the LCD Flex cable (this is the cable that connects your motherboard to your LCD screen) are going bad and needs replacement. You can still use your laptop though but I strongly recommend having it fixed ASAP before it gets worse. You're still under warranty, call HP/Compaq at 1-800-652-6672.

Good luck.

Blue vertical line

The lines appearing on your LCD means it has a defect on the screen.

There are 3 types of pixel defect
1) dead pixel - pixel is always off
2) stuck pixel - pixel is always on
3) hot pixel - pixel is on but in red, green, blue or yellow, can also be a light black color

You can try to fix stuck or hot pixels but dead is dead.
1st method, flashing different colors rapidly: has a great tool. This is their free java applet or you can download it below.

2nd method, applying pressure to pixel:
Damp paper towel, Small stylus or dull pencil.

3rd method, tapping the pixel:
Pen with cover on or another small, blunt object.

If your laptop is still under warranty, get it replaced. If not you are looking at the most expensive part in a laptop to get replaced. (LCD screens on laptop is roughly equivalent to 40-60% of the total laptop cost

Please rate this if it this helps.

Dc connection overheating

Well if , the stripe u're talking about is a crack in the display, than it;s not caused by heat or electrical surge... If not, than u can go to a technical evaluator, and than if u have the time and money make an official complaint ....(if it's still in warranty..)...and recuperate u;re financial damage...

If not, just find a second hand display, and change it u;re self, it's easy !
