Question about HP Compaq Presario R4000 Notebook

1 Answer

Display WOW u will never solve this Display went bad  (Vertical stripe appeared)  Compaq fixed it,,,  Next a hot spot (Very Hot) appeared in lower RH corner causing a black aura type spot.  Out of warrenty now  so i used it as a desktop with a external mouse keyboard and monitor.  This worked fine for a few months now the external monitor shuts off after windows starts on the R4000,,,,, Fn F4 does nothing,,  trying to use the original restore disk dont work as it still blacks out.  The monitor is fine as i reconnected it to a regular desktop and it checks out ok.

Interesting, I have a similar vertical stripe in mine (in the furthest right 4th of the screen about 100px wide) but it is about a year out of warranty. I wonder if this is a wide enough problem that they would still fix mine.

Not sure about the display dying though...not something I've experienced yet.

yes, same issue, i thought this was related to screen itself....
there is also some overheating at times but maybe is not related.
no steps really yet, i'm in the googling phase

I have a similar problem. the display sometimes completely shuts off and at other times, displays weird colors. frazzled green instead of black and sometimes, pink instead of white.

whe i attach an extenal monitor, it seems to work fine. let me know if you guys have found solutions to this issue. Even temporary suggestions are welcome at this point.

Sounds like your builtin graphics controller went bad.

Display problem

Hi, I had a similar problem and fixed it. Open the calculator and you will see that the ribbon connecting the LCD to the PCB has white and black stripes. The black stripes are the actual conductors. The white pieces are isolation between the conductors and serve the purpose of glueing the ribbon to the PCB.

Take a small flate screwdriver, its thickness has to be that of the white stripes. Heat up the end of the screwdriver with a hot air gun/lighter/hair blowdryer or whatever. Dont make it too hot. It should only be hot enough to melt the glue holding the ribbon to the PCB. Press the screwdriver on a white stripe and move the screwdriver up and down the white line which is on the PCB. Do this for each white stripe individually. Reheat the screwdirver if necessary, since there are a lot of tracks/stripes to cover.

It may be useful to use two screwdrivers: one to heat the glue of a white section and a second to cool/set the glue so that the ribbon is held in place, instead of coming loose because the glue is too hot. I did it only with one mildly hot screwdriver. It shouldn't be so hot that it actually burns you. You can test the temperature by pressing it against a hot melt glue stick (those used in a glue gun), if it melts the glue (but not too quick) it is hot enough.

It is unlikely that the ribbon came loose from the LCD, but if the previous didn't work you can try doing it on the LCD aswell.

Good luck!

Vertical black stripe on screen

Hi my name is Roety,
I can help you with your issue ,
The black strip is either a bad panel or part of the lower buffer board is bad. There are ribbon cables that run from the panel to the buffer it may just be a loose ribbon connector

This sounds like something has messed up your crystals in your display, and while I do not know that much about laptop displays this sounds like it can only be fixed by a technician or by replacement.
