Question about Nikon Coolpix 5200 Digital Camera

1 Answer

Autofocus malfunction Never had a problem with extreme close-up.  This morning went to take a detail shot and the focus no longer worked.  This happened in all settings. Nothing changed when I tried to reset autofocus settings.  Still completely blurry.  All other kinds of pictures sharp-distant, middle distant.  I bought the camera for it's macro-abilities.  Help!

The following blog outlines some repair options for a lens error:

Recommend trying Fix #4. It may or may not work, but it's worth a try.

My pictures are coming out blur

With digital cameras, blurred photos are almost always a result of camera shake. You need to hold the camera still even after pressing the button, as there is often a short delay before the shutter fires.

Many digital cameras have a two-stage shutter press- first pressure causes the camera to focus, then the follow through pressure takes the picture. If you are rushing this, you may get unfocussed shots.

Finally, make sure that you have not left the camera in Macro mode. This is a special extreme close-up mode offered by some cameras, and it does not allow autofocus on objects at normal distances. The icon for Macro mode is a little flower.

Some cameras have a "face recognition" mode that tries to find a face in the shot and focus on that, so check your autofocus modes to see if it is set to something odd like that.

What is macro used for

It's used for extreme close up shots. The setting allows the autofocus to focus closer than it normally can, but may prevent it from focussing on distant objects.

Autofocus is activated by pressing the shutter button halfway, be shure to have a EF lens in the camera, otherwise it won't make autofocus, put camera on full auto mode or "sports mode" (the running guy) and the focus settings on redictive AI Servo AF: Continuously tracks subject movement and achieves focus before the exposure starts.

Auto-focus isn't working

Try checking your settings for the type of shot you are taking and for the type of focus......
type of shot is the dial on the top, and then:
1) menu, metering
and also check your autofocus mode
2)menu, autofocus; try the single autofocus, it might be set to continual

Also, you could try updating the firmware in your camera. You do this through the Nikon website.

Focus malfunction

THere is a little switch on the back of the camera, just under the area selection Dpad. Make sure it is not in the 'L' setting. This locks the selected autofocus area.

DSC-F717 autofocus stops working

I was first going to also suggest a reset. Does your manual focus function correctly from near to far(turning the focus ring in manual) and does the wide to tele motion function fully and smoothly? (lens adjustability without restriction) Was your camera exposed to extreme heat or elements?(beach sand or water of any kind) It may mean electronics only or a mechanical restriction causing an electronic malfunction. A last resort may mean your closer documenting when or how frequent it happens and maybe ultimately a trip (for your camera) to Sony. Get a price quote for repair since you might strike a happy medium of using the camera differently (manually focussing) without exceeding the value of the camera for repair costs.
