Re: installing new over load relay

The line voltage goes to the overload and the neutral(and capacitor lines if it has one) goes to the relay.

10 year old maytag MTB2154DR compressor won't start fans runs. How do I replace the start relay? Can I put a 3 in 1 hard start kit? thanks Bob

Hello Bob,
To replace the replay just remove the old relay and install the new on and connect wire(s) to new one exactly as they were connected to old one, it is recommended that the overload also be replaced, but not necessary to see if the compressor will start. I begrudgingly say yes a 3n1 could be used and some will say thats fine but in my experience if a 3n1 is needed the compressor is on its last leg and adding a huge capicator onto something that never had it will send a dying compressor over the wall so quick, and money is wasted on the 3n1 and the end result is a dead compressor.
If you have a meter the relay and overload can be checked first, by checking for continuty on the relay by placing the meter leads into the 2 holes on the compressor where they fit onto the pins of the compressor and check for ZERO ohms resistiance and also zero ohms on the overload by a meter lead in where it fits on pin on compressor and on wire terminal where wire connects. Both relay and over load should have zero ohmsresistiance and continuty if good.

the part number for the OEM relay is 10097204 it should be in stock at your local appliance parts store.

Refrig model # ED2FTGXKQ04 replacing original run/start/overload relay with new part #4387535 not sure what wires to what terminals

there's a start device that goes on your machine that has the overload and relay built in it,part number 2188831 and it's around 25 dollars, comes with instructions where the wires go.go to the sears site and look it up you have to put your model number in and when the diagram comes up go to the one that says unit and you'll see the compressor and you'll see the start device part number 18 on the diagram and you'll see part 2188831.don't pull off any wires until you get the part and then you'll se what wire goes to the overload and connect it to the new part and so on.hope this helps you out.

My Haier refrigerator, model # AES44W, the compressor will not start. The relay keeps clicking apparently to keep it from damaging the compressor. Do I need a new overload protector as it does not have a...

This sounds like the relay has gone on the compressor. Call your local appliance parts store
(no model no. needed) and ask for a hard start kit. Instructions are on kit.
I use ERP 410 powerstart relay capacitor and over load. See it has everything and is much better than the original.
Remove the back cover, pull the original relay off the compressor pins, cut the two wires and install according to instructions. Very easy job.

Thanks for using fixya

Fridge stopped working both freezer and fridge, Here clicking at compressor, compressor not starting, cooling fan and everything else OK, could it be the compressor or is there a chance the thermal switch...

This is a bad compressor, or overload-relay kit. Disconnect the power, remove the overload-relay from the compressor, and test the three compressor terminals for continuity . You should have continuity between each terminal, and you should not have continuity between any terminal and ground. If this tests ok, then replace the overload-relay kit. This is a common repair for me, and it is very rare for us to find a bad compressor, so you should be ok. If it is a bad compressor, and it is less than five years old, you have a five year sealed system warrantee, that will cover the repair cost. If it is over five years old, it is not worth repair. When you are done with the repair, make sure you install a 2000 joule or higher, surge protector to protect your refrigerator from this type of repair in the future. Good Luck, Appliance Specialists

Bad overload relay

The compressor is usually fitted with a thermal overlload switch. It is usually secured to the compressor with some sort of spring mount so it maintains physical contact
The parts guy was probably talking about a hard start kit. They typically are a universal fit, and come with instructions. Be sure to check the electrical supply to the outlet for the fridge. Excessive voltage drop when it tries to start will cause such problems, and will eventually cause damage to the compressor.

Yes replace the start relay and overload. Part number 4387835 or 4387535 or 8201799. If that doesnt help it then you need a need compressor. Most of those factory relays have a capacitor on them. You need to pay attention to how they are wired up.

Freezer thawed. Replaced temperature control, replaced defrost timer, replaced defrost thermostat. Compressor relay is cycling. No cooling still. Help!

Why were those parts changed? Was the compressor cycling on overload at the time?
If so, you should have first replaced the relay/overload combination and the see what happened.
