My top load washer goes through the was...

My top load washer goes through the wash cycle and then stops at pause, and does not continue to drain the wash water. the timer needs to be manually turned to a certain point past the wash cycle and then resumes agitating and pumps out the soapy water. i tried a new timer and it does the same thing. not sure if its a faulty timer or another problem.
