The batteries (you need two) that you are looking for are compatible with the A76 or LR44 type. I picked up a package of 5 @ the Dollarama dollar stores for a buck ($1 CDN). Most dollar stores do not carry them, so you might have to go to a camera store or your local RadioShack, but it will cost much more there.

    Oh, yeah . . .

I forgot to mention about the battery cover. That is harder to find & you have to be careful not to get the wrong one. (I once came across a Pentax ME Super (which is what the Pentax ME F is based on) that was missing its battery cover and I tried a battery cover from a Pentax ME and it didn't work, but when I tried the battery cover from my own Pentax ME Super, it worked like a charm. Go figure!)

I used to live in Toronto, so I just went to Pentax Canada and it was very reasonable. (I can't remember how much, but I do remember thinking that was so reasonable when I bought mine from Pentax.)

Try email Pentax directly and ask how much . . .

    or . . .

Go to your local camera shop that has a lot of old used SLR cameras and ask them if they have one and how much.

It should be less than $10.

    Cheers!

And finally . . . as for using the camera without batteries . . .

You can use the camera without batteries if you put it on the 125X mode on the dial (or even the B mode which keeps the shutter open as long as you press the shutter release button) & set your aperture manually.

The 125X mode is the mode to use with a Flash unit.

It sets the shutter speed to 1/125th of a second.

If you have a flash unit attached to the top, you can use the camera (as long as you know how to set your flash unit & aperture for proper exposure).

But . . . if you don't have a flash, you can still take pictures, except, now you have to figure out what aperture you need to set the camera in order to get proper exposure. (Since you don't have a battery in the camera to take advantage if its built-in light meter.)

I would do this with my hand-held light meter, but if you don't have one . . .

When you buy 35mm film, it used to come with a little piece of paper that gave you some general camera settings in order to set your camera. It would have an aperture / shutter speed (which I believe 1/125th sec. was one of the standard shutter speed settings they would list) for different lighting / weather conditions. If the film you get doesn't have this, you might be able to get these general camera settings from the film manufacturer's website.

    Take care & Happy Imaging!

The light meter is not working on my Pentax K1000

there are three different possibilities. remove three screws, take off bottom cover. remove three screws of battery holder, lift to see if the battery wire has corroded or broken off. solve by extending wire and resoldering. the next involves removing the top cover to see if the meter coil is dead,if this is the case it needs to be replaced, or there is a broken lead somewhere. usually it is cause no. 1.

The battery cover won't come off what do i do to get it off

The battery cover on a Pentax K1000 35mm SLR Camera is a little round plug on the bottom plate with a slot in it that is meant to be unscrewed with a small coin. It takes a button cell or two. I don't see how you could have any difficulty with this unless it is frozen up by heavy corrosion or something like that (which I have never seen).

Perhaps you actually meant to ask about a different camera, in which case you need to say what the make and model is.

Exposure needle not working

clean the battery cover and contact with a pencil eraser making sure the cap threads are also clean.
this is a fairly expensive repair if the meter or circuit board needs replacing ( no new parts are available ).
if the meter still does not work, and the K1000 is in good working order buy a inexpensive hand held light meter.

Can't open battery compartment.

ashe 1977

there are two ways to fix this.
1- remove the bottom cover, take the rubber seal off from the battery compartment, remove the battery then soak the bottom cover in vinegar overnite. this will remove all corrosion. remove the battery cap and clean the threads. completely dry the cap and bottom cover, apply WD40 to battery cover threads. clean battery contact with pencil eraser ( carefully ). reinstall the rubber seal, replace bottom cover.------ best fix.

2- this may not work but it's worth a try. just apply ( carefully ) WD40 around battery cap and let it set for about an hour, re-apply and wait another half hour. If this doesn't work refer to # 1

Pentax Super ME

Yes, the ME super has an electronic shutter that works in conjunction with the LEDs. Purchase some fresh S76 button cells, A76 will work, but the will not last as long. Make sure the battery cover is corrosion free and install the batteries so both cells face positive toward the cover.

Manual Rewind Pentax PZ

Hi Joel,

If your battery is dead, just put in a new battery.

Go into somewhere that is completely dark and open the back of the camera and remove the film.
Or go Costco, WalMart and Kmart and they will do it for free.
