I had the same problem with my 2712 while it was under warranty. After about 10 minutes it would display the problem you described. Found out it was heat related. The cooling fan in the bottom of the laptop was not functioning properly.
Symptoms of my Toshiba Satellite A105-S2712 Laptop:
- No display on the screen (Black Screen). But when I press Fn+F5 keys it displays the menu that appears when you press F8 during start up. After this display it restarts continously,
- I repalced the memory and the hard disk but no change,
- I am unable to boot from the CD drive and floppy disk drive.
Please give me the solution for the stated problem
I thank you in advance

That takes an IDE HDD. They are universal so any notebook IDE HDD will replace that 1. I like Weatern Digital because they really are good about standing behind their hard drives. Now it only came with a 4200 RPM so when u upgrade purchase the 5400 RPM. If the bios firmware only supports the 60GB then u will need to format a larger drive with a second partition using admin tools as a mass storage device.
Honestly, it is normally not worth it to upgrade the cpu on a laptop. Laptops are build to deal with a certain amount of heat and adding a faster cpu can cause the current cpu cooling fans to not get the job done anymore. You will seem instability in your system and could possibly damage it due to over heating.
With that said you would only be able to upgrade to a very slightly higher speed cpu and your money would be better spent else where. Some good ways to speed up a laptop are max out your memory or install a faster hard drive. For example if your current drive is a stock 5400rpm unit a 7200rpm drive would give you a nice boost. You could also look into a solid state option.
Both these upgrades will give your laptop a better boost without the hassle and risk of a cpu upgrade.
the laptop should pick up a 20gb or 60gb ide hard drive with no problem
