Question about Toshiba Satellite A135-S2276 Notebook
The webcam is locked by another application while there's no other progam ruuning.What can i do?
I don't know what exactly fixed the problem but I managed to fix it. I'm using a Toshiba Satellite A215 by the way.
Here's what I did
Control Panel >> System Maintenance >> Device Manager
Go to Imaging Devices and right-click "Chicony USB 2.0 Camera" and choose "Update Driver Software"
First I clicked on "Search automatically for updated driver software" but everything was already up to date. So then I went to "Browse my Computer for Driver Software" and then to "Let Me Pick from a List". I updated the USB Video Device and rebooted but that only made it worse I think. Then I tried updating one of the "Chicony USB 2.0 Camera"'s and that did the trick. Yey. So now my webcam works.

Try Pesante80's solution.He/She is absolutely correct...it is the webcam software. I un-installed the software that came with the laptop...and voila! My webcam now works...no more irritating messages! I went into add/remove ...removed the offending program, and restarted the laptop...cam works great.

I had this problem on satellite U300 with Vista. I fixed it unistalling all the native webcam programs and drivers. then restart and Vista will automatically install the latest driver release. It should work. If not, try also to install the ffdshow codec. In any case, the problem is definitely the chicony webcam programs which aren't compatible with vista. The latest drivers instead are. Try also to complete the unistalling by using a reg cleaner as ccleaner. Hope I'd be useful.

Issue: Other programs already using the device? Unable to see the Video using Messenger?
Solution(Verified): There might be some programs that is already attached with the device. To deactivate them, run msconfig by going to accessories and then run. Then under the tab labeled "Services" check the box that says "Hide all Microsoft services" and then click on disable all press ok. You should then be asked to restart so press ok and once the computer is back up try with your messenger software and it should work.

Same thing happened to me on my
Gateway presumably with the same camera.
Others noted that when they installed Messenger it locked. I took this tack and uninstalled everything I could think of until I came to VirtualDub.
Now, amongst movie makers VirtualDub is considered great although a GUI that takes some getting used to.
So I dumped my built webcam software and am sticking with VirtualDub. It works great.

Franki1118 is right. uninstalling the camera assistant software fixes the problem. I can now use the webcam for msn! :)

I dont really know if this will solve cuz mine is A215-s4747
1st- go to computer
2nd- (click it) go to uninstall program or change ( its at the top)
3rd- find camera assistant right click (click change)
4th - there will be 3 choices click the MIDDLE ONE
and after that it will load and restart your computer
then there it works

There can only be one application running at a time that uses the webcam so if it's toshiba it would be Camera assistant just right click on it and exit. Or turn it off using solution 2

Are you running an instant messenger program that uses webcam chat? Many times, the processes that run these programs will hang, even when the program has been closed.
I assume rebooting fixes your problem, at least for one use. If you want to get around restarting, unplugging the webcam and then plugging it back in will usually free up the resources.
