Reloading windows 98 on a Panasonic Toughbook CF37

I was given a Toughbook CF37 with a 6GB hard drive. I am trying to get it to work to give to a kid who has had a rough life and and thought it may be a good XMAS surprise gift.. It orignally had Windows 95 installed, but would not boot up. I formatted the hardrive and booted off the CD ROM with Windows 98 SE CD. The system does the initial load of the files needed to continue the setup, but the system freezes when it is trying to determine the hardware. I beleiev it is freezing at that point since the progress bar on the initial setup gets to 100%. I confirmed the system is freezing rather than just thinking since I need to remove the battery to shut it down. I have tried to disable and enable different combinations of peripherals in the BIOS setup. I think that windows 98 may not have the driver of drivers for certain hardware on the toughbook. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Restart in Safe Mode and Use Msconfig.exe loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution'); Restart your computer, press and hold down the CTRL key after your computer completes the Power On Self Test (POST), and then choose Safe Mode from the Startup menu. For additional information about Windows 98 startup, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 178548 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/178548/EN-US/) No 'Starting Windows 98' Message at Startup After your computer restarts in Safe mode, use the System Configuration Utility tool (Msconfig.exe) to minimize conflicts that may prevent your computer from finishing Setup.

To start and use the System Information tool: 1. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Information. 2. On the Tools menu, click System Configuration Utility. 3. Sata drivers xp

For any Panasonic Toughbook built after the year 2005,
if the Toughbook uses a SATA hard drive instead of an
IDE hard drive, then you will need to use Windows XP SP3
(Service Pack 3) instead of XP SP2 (Service Pack 2).

The XP installation CD for SP3 automatically includes
SATA drivers and you do not need any extra drivers.

That is it. Good Luck and Best Regards from:

Windows xp installion does not see my hard drive on Panasonic CF-74

Just a thought but are you using XP Pro SP2 or SP3?

In my experience, only XP Service Pack 3 will see your
Hard Disk Drive, not XP Service Pack 2.

Panasonic Toughbook won't load Windows XP CD

You can check to see if the hard drive is dislodged, but other than that I don't know what to tell you. If you know the drive is functioning correctly then your motherboard is probably dead.

Panasonic cf-37 audio driver

The only drivers for the CF37 I can find
are on the Panasonic Canada Website:

http://help.panasonic.ca/english/support/sandd/softwarequery.asp

Enter CF37 (not CF-37) and you should
find the right drivers.

Toughbook cf-18 cannot boot thru window. it come out with a start using safemode, then go into window , then blue screen with "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage...

Yu possibly have a virus
You will need to format the hard drive and reload Windows if this doesn't work you will need a new hard drive.
Try to "defragment the hard drive 1st. check the disk for errors.

Pannasonic Toughbook CF-47 with Windows 2000, get error message: "operating system not found." Tried all 3 drives, rebooting and charged battery fully to no avail??? Please advise. Thank you.

This means that the computer cannot find an operating system on the hard drive. This is often because the hard drive has gone bad. Replace with a new drive and reinstall windows and that will solve your problem. Thanks and please if you could remember to give this answer a rating of fixya; even if the answer isn't the greatest news :c) Thanks! :c)

Cf-18 toughbook

The BIOS may not support the larger drive at all; I suggest you look for a Toughbook forum and repost there and check Panasonic's site for a manual download and possibly a BIOS upgrade if the unit is equipped with a flash BIOS.

Toughbook CF-51 Laptop DVD Drive Problem

It could be a software or driver issue. First try updating the drivers for the drive, and try either using different burning software or uninstalling & reloading your current software. I had a cf72 with a DVD/CD combo drive that the DVD reader went out. This could also be the issue, if so you'll need to replace it in order to burn CD's.
