Question about Kenmore 63662 / 63664 / 63669 Microwave Oven

1 Answer

Heat reduced to maybe 50%

Bought in 2004. Has recently started running at about 50% heat. Was making a slight squeeking noise but once that stopped it reduced the heat. May be a coincidence... Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Greg

The stirrer may have been causing the squeaking noise, and the low heat is most likely the magnetron.

Generally, the most common causes of a failure to heat are:

- bad door switches or door switch mounts
- loose connection at the magnetron
- problem or loose connection on the control unit circuit board
- bad magnetron or other high voltage part

Microwave does not run though it has electricity. makes a clicking noise

When you say there is electricity, I take this to mean that your display, buttons, and countdown timer are all functioning normally, but when you press start no light, fan, turntable, or heating response occurs?

Normally the only thing that clicks on a microwave is the relay. If it is repeatedly clicking and nothing is happen, it could indicated that it has failed.

Repairing this will require some replacement parts (probably between 5 and $50) and whatever labour costs (if you do have it serviced, the shop should give you this estimate up front).

Remember, while you can do some repairs on your microwave, what you don't know can kill you... even on an unplugged microwave, so make sure you understand the dangers and how to reduce them before you try anything inside a microwave. If you want to do more yourself, let me know and I will point you in the direction of some good resources.

I have a GE Spacemaker XL1400. Everything works except it does not heat the contents. The noise is slightly different while running compared to when it worked. Any Ideas? the unit is about 11 years old but...

The magnetron tube which makes the microwaves has probably worn out. As it ages a kind of groaning noise is typical and that may be what you're hearing. There are other possibilities too, but as old as your oven is I'd put the tube as most likely.

You could take the oven to a shop for a diagnosis if you want to keep it, but parts can be costly and labor will probably be at least $50. This might be a good time to consider replacing the oven.

Kenmore Microwave Oven Sudden Power Reduction

I would be sure to check the microwave's outlet under a load.

One good way is to use a toaster or hair dryer for about a minute to see if they run at full power and run without their heating elements dimming.

If the power at the outlet is steady, I would suggest a hard reset. Unplug the unit for a minute or so. Then plug it back in, set the clock and try again.

If it still fails to heat properly, I would say you have a failing magnetron, and it would just be a coincidence that the failure began after the new wiring was installed.

If you need to order the magnetron, Sears sells it for $73.13, but you can get it for $41.84 here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

New microwave; loud fan when heating items

Since you say it's new, it should be under warranty. I would call GE (see your owner's manual) to get a local authorized service center. Then while you're on the phone with the service center, you can start it up and hold the phone close to it to demonstrate to the technician how loud it is. They should be able to tell you if it will be covered under warranty so you get it fixed free.
