First you have to uninstall all the old drivers which you installed on your OS, now open the Motherboard and see the chipset which is near by the Sound port see the Chipset no on it ……

You can use the manufacturer version or you can download them from http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/downloadsView.aspx?Langid=1&PNid=14&PFid=23&Level=4&Conn=3&DownTypeID=3&GetDown=false

The manufacturer versions are usually pretty outdated, Good luck

Enter XP in safe mode and uninstall or remove the sound device from the hardware explorer. Reboot, and the sound hardware will be detected. You can now install the correct driver. Their are many versions and variations of drivers though, and most are motherboard specific. I would try looking at the motherboard manufacturers website for the driver. It may not be the latest one, but it will work. If they don't list an XP one, the use the windows 2000 one instead.

If it a corrupt or failed driver, it will have to be completely removed before the new driver can be installed, be sure to uninstall the device completely before re-installing, if you cannot locate driver disk, take the cover off, and usually the mainboards model number is located either next to the processor, or between the PCI slots.. but slot of odd bodd boards have them elsewhere, locate this, go to the manafacturer website and download the relevent drivers for that board

Using a microphone with computer

To use any microphone with your computer you will need to enable it in control panel. The following instructions are for Windows XP but are broadly similar for Vista and Win7

Click START, CONTROL PANEL, SOUNDS & AUDIO DEVICES

Click VOICE

In Sounds & Audio Devices Properties window locate SOUND PLAYBACK box. Click the VOLUME button. Make sure that there is not a check-mark in the MUTE box against microphone in the list of devices and that the volume slider is at the top of the scale.

Make sure the MUTE ALL box isn't checked before closing the window.

Now click the VOLUME button in the SOUND RECORDING BOX. Here SELECT microphone as an input source for recording (as opposed to un-checking mute in the playback controls).

NOTE if your microphone is not listed in the 2 sets of volume controls click OPTIONS, PROPERTIES on the tool-bar and place a check against microphone in the list entitled 'show the following volume controls' and then click OK. Same applies for Internal mic.

That should be it.

To adjust audio volume generally.

Under VOLUME tab adjust Device Volume as necessary. Also (under Loudpeaker Settings) click Speaker Volume and adjust slider to suit.

You might put a check mark in the box to show the volume control on the Task Bar so you can go straight to it to make adjustments in the future.

Sound wont work

If sound won't work while playing videos from Youtube, it could be either of the following:
  1. The volume control of the video itself is in mute or low mode;
  2. The volume control of the headset or speaker is in low mode;
  3. The volume control of the computer itself is in mute or low mode that can be found in the task-bar sound icon; or
  4. The computer itself has no audio device installed.

No audio with videos

When playing videos in YouTube and has no sound maybe the cause of the following errors:
  1. The volume control of the video itself is in mute mode, to solve this problem refer to the YouTube video controls, particularly the volume button.
  2. The volume control of the headset or speaker is in the low mode, to solve that problem check the volume control of the speaker or the headset.
  3. The volume control in the computer task-bar sound icon is in mute mode, when the icon has "x" means the sound is not working, to solve that problem click the icon and remove the check in the small boxes at the bottom that causes the disappearance of sound.
  4. The computer has no installed audio devices although you have the audio hardwares, I am referring to compatible audio drivers in order to work the device, to solve it please check your devices in My Computer>>Manage>>Devices. When there are exclamatory sign to some devices that maybe the sounds, so better look for compatible drivers in order for it to work.
  5. The sound cord maybe plugged in a wrong socket, to solve it please observe the color coding or refer to the manual. And if doesn't work in front panel please do it in a back panel. To ensure that the front panel is working you should open the case and look for that little power cords that have to be connected to the motherboard.
  6. The hardware might have no power especially speakers because they require power to work so better check the power cord if it is connected.
  7. If the foregoing are not helpful please ask the technical support of your supplier.

Hello you can enable this option(showing volume control in task bar).This is how you enable it.You click on Start button and continue to the Control Panel item of the Start menu,then in the Control Panel window find Sounds, Speech, and Audio Devices section, click on it.Then click on Sounds and Audio Devices.In the Volume tab (top line of buttons) you will see a check-box"Place volume icon in the task bar" put a tick on it and click Apply.Now you are done and you should see the volume icon:)

My polk audio speakers from a prior hp computer are very, very quiet on my new compaq system. what can i do?

The audio setting in your new computer is set to low level. Right click on the speaker button at the right hand bottom corner of your task bar,Then open the volume control from there. push the slider up in the volume control and also on the wave.You can push the slider up for the CD player as well as PC speaker also if any of these are also kept at a low level. If you do not have a speaker icon in the task bar, open control panel,(click on start and you will see the control panel selection, double click on it) and double click on sound and audio devices. Under device volume, push the slider from low to high. while you are here you can click on "place volume icon in the task bar" You can also click "advanced" and select the appropriate speakers here, like desktop stereo speakers or surround sound or whatever suits your speaker. click ok to save this and that is it.
