usb is not working in front of my pc

  • kimmyh3 Feb 07, 2008

none of the USB ports are working, they just stopped working when I was using it. I tried uninstalling them and rebooting but still nothing. I checked all the properties and it says they are all working fine. I even bought software that scans for problems in the computer and that didn't fix it either. I don't know what else to do?

Front USB ports are an extension of a header on the mainboard, it connects via a bunch on individual pins, if any of these pins are wrong the front USB will not work, but usually this would lock up all USB and the ones on the back will not work either, i would suggest the front USB panel was either not connected at all, or it was conected wrong, usual USB header colors of wores is BLACK, GREEN, WHITE, RED, note all mainboards are different, so the black could start from either side of the header, b sure to refer to your motherboards manual for exact pin loactions on the header

SOURCE: usb not working

You said that the PC has no OS. Try installing an operating system first. USB ports will not work without an OS, unless accessed thru BIOS settings. Maybe the USB ports are working afterall.

Where can I get a replacement for my 2 front usb ports on my optiplex 760..they are not working??

I've never seen 2 front USB ports that were bad. I've seen 1 that was defective because the USB device that was plugged into it was broken off. However in that case it caused the power supply to short out and prevent the computer from powering on. Here is a link to your model:
If the USB ports on the back of your computer work then the front ones should too unless there is a connector dislodged to motherboard. All USB ports use the same circuit.

I cannot get a SanDisk flashdrive to go into either of the USB ports on my new desktop computer. I am using the USB ports located on top of the computer

To test the functionality of the usb ports in front of the computer
1. Insert another flash drive or another usb device like a usb mouse on front the computer 2. If it detect the usb device that means 2 things flash drive might be bad and the front usb port is working 3. If it does not, It means that the flash drive might be bad or the usb port is not connected to the front panel of the computer 4. Try also inserting the flash drive at the back of the computer see if the usb drive is detected in all ports 5. Check the BIOS for any usb port associativity

I put my memory card into the Dynex reader and nothing is happening

Move the reader to a different USB port. If that doesn't work, the reader's probably given it up. I've seen several of this brand reader die an early death, for no apparent reason.

If I Insert USB in the USB entrance before I start my PC it will hang up until i remove it I think problem in USB entrance how can I solve it? thnx

It is my pleasure to guide you.

A computer has USB ports on the back and on the front of most modern units. USB is what is called "usb hot swap". The pc can be on when the USB devices are plugged in or unplugged and the OS should recognize it. So if the pc hangs up there may be something else wrong.

1. Try unplugging all USB devices, boot the pc without any plugged in. Choose one device and plug it into each port. Wait until the OS recognizes the device. You will see a box come up with different options, one is at the bottom that allows you to open explorer. You can pick it or just hit the escape key to void the selection. (You do not need to reboot to try the rest of the USB Ports) Do this to all USB ports, both front and back. I know this will take time but you need to eliminate all the USB ports to make sure they are not the problem. Once you know that the USB ports are all good then the next step is

2. Now take each device and plug one at a time into any of the ports. I would use one on the front of the pc, makes it easier. Again let the OS see that it is there and prompt you for action.

3. If all your devices work after this testing, then plug everything back in and reboot the pc.

4. Have you made any changes in the BIOS? May be reset the BIOS lately?

This may sound like strange question but have you installed the OS to the USB device? Some Devices/OS's/PC's allow booting from USB devices. If the computer is trying to boot from USB it will cause terrible slow down in perfromance, check your "Boot Priority" Settings in the BIOS? The boot priority should list the HD Drive as the first boot drive.

Good luck and please post back that you are successful, giving thumbs up, or that I can be more help.

My transcend 4 GB works fine on my office computer but not on my computer at home. pl. help

Assumption your PC do have enhanced USB ports ie USB 2.0 and using WinXP OS.

If your home PC Operating System WinXP, you should at least have WinXP Service Pack 2 installed on your PC for the USB ports to function using Microsoft generic USB drivers.

If your USB ports are using VIA chipsets, sometimes you need to install the VIA USB drivers too.

Hope it helps.

USB suddenly malfunctioning on Dell TOwer

It does sound like your ports on the front might be bad. They usually connect to a seperate port on the motherboard than the rear ones, and I have seen devices short out the front ports, such as a USB music player.

You can remove the ports on the device manager, and they should come back ok, without worry. However, I doubt that is going to help the front ones. I think you have a hardware problem.

If that is the case, the easiest solution is to get a USB hub, and run a USB cable from the rear, to the front of the computer.

My two front usb ports cant read usb hard drives

Some external USB drives require external power sources. Typically this is done either with an external power supply that connects to the drive or a second USB cable that connects to the drive and a second usb port on the pc. I have even seen one drive that comes with a Y cable. one end goes to the drive and the 2 usb plugs go to the pc.
