Question about Microsoft Windows 98 for PC

Need administrator level control over 'new' (ex-network) computer

Hi,

I have a "new - to -me" compaq deskpro en which used to be part of a network.

I have deleted the old and unreachable drives, (R:, S:, T:, etc.) but now find that I am unable to install some new software, etc. due to not having administrator level control.

As this computer came 'as is,' I do not have the original installation disks to simply reinstall and solve the problem that way.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks, RobJ,

    Thanks for your reply.

I didn't try your process, as I was able to locate a legit Win98se CD , formatted the whole hard drive (C: & D: partitions) and reinstalled.

However, it still wants the admin password...as I now have another computer, I'm tempted to just forget the whole thing.

Lots of password bypass tips online, usually involving deleting *.pwl and/or changing windows logon to network client along with several reboots, but nothing has worked.

I might have another look at downloadable password retrieval software, but it's a tedious process - lots of stuff advertised as free turns out to be anything but, if you can take the time to find it amongst a plethora of hype, adverts, links and assorted rubbish.

    Thanks for your time.

Windows 98 does not have the same concept of "administrator level control' as later Windows versions, so it is more likely that this computer has some form of 'lockdown' software or configuration, especially if it was previously a school computer. There is a wide variety of ways to lockdown a computer, from policies in the registries to core modifications, so your best bet will be to locate a set of Windows 98SE disks, online or elsewhere, and reformat and install fresh. Without them, you will need considerable DOS and registry knowledge, or a friend or consultant with same.

If you want to try, start the computer in Safe Mode, and run msconfig.exe, and disable most executable stuff in system.ini, win.ini, config.sys, and autoexec.bat. Then run regedit.exe, and locate the policy keys, and remove them, an admittedly very simplistic summary of steps. But they may have deleted and replaced too much of the core, for this to have a chance of working. You really need someone with considerable DOS and Win98 experience, or just reinstall Win98.

Look at the back of the computer. One side panel removes. (Access Panel) There are two Thumbscrews to loosen on the Access Panel, then the panel is lifted off, or brought straight out.

Have old compaq Deskpro EN ENS815EC733 M1BU

I would buy a cheap usb card to fit into a pci slot on the old computer.
Otherwise you would need a serial cable (if your laptop has a serial port) if not it would be a serial to usb plus the software to transfer, i would say far too much trouble.
A usb card is a couple £/$

Probably your power supply. They are pretty cheap to replace. If it's plugged into a power bar then try plugging it directly into a wall socket just to make sure it isn't your power supply.

I need 2 reset the settings on a compaq deskpro en. so i can use a new hard drive that has windows xp pro sp1 & sp2 that i had install. it will not show on my screen. please help with this!.

the problem with using a hard drive that has a preexisting installation of windows is that you may run into architecture problems (different CPUs can cause this), or hard drive controller problems. Your best bet is to install XP again from the install disk, and call windows; from my experience they have just given me a new installation key.

Compac deskpro Pentium 111 - 600

I'm not completely sure on what you are exactly asking here, but I'll do the best I can. If you have the Recovery CD, you need to boot from the CD and run the Recovery. When you go to do the recovery you will have two options, the normal recovery or the destructive recovery. If there is nothing important and everything can be wiped, run a destructive, but if you need everything run the other one. If you do not have a Recovery CD but have a Windows Vista disk that matches the version on your computer (IE: Windows Vista Home 32 bit is on your computer and you have a Windows Vista Home 32 bit disk) and you DO NOT need anything saved, just reinstall Windows. There is a product key for Vista on the sticker attached to your case. If you have neither, then you can probably get a new recovery disk by contacting HP (since they bought out Compaq). If you can not get a new Recovery CD, you will need to go out and buy a new copy of Windows Vista.
