How do you get to and replace fuse in power cord for rand McNally 710 gps

Deborah, most of the time the fuse is in the cigarette lighter. The end unscrews. However, if that fuse blew, you may have wiring that has shorted. Much more common to blow you lighter fuse, in the car. Happens with plugging in and turning the "lighter" body, and shorting the lighter socket.

First check the socket a cigarette lighter! You could borrow one if you've lost yours because they are all the same size. If it works then read on.. Most cigarette lighter ADAPTERS I've seen have an LED on them to tell you it's making good contact. If it has got an LED but it's not illuminating then unscrew the black cap at the tip of the adapter and check the fuse. If the fuse is blown replace it with one of the same rating. If that was no help at all then try resetting the Garmin. Unclip the face place and press the reset button. Now try turning it on. Hopefully I have given you at least one thing new to try! :) Regards, SparkGap

265W car charger blew a fuse (while using it on my Harley Sportster!) Some say replace it with 1A some say 3A. The # is LF.T1AH250VP, and by the way, what's up with 250V !!!!!

I would ignore the 250V. The concern is the current. I would not use a fuse higher than the one shipped with the unit. According to the PN you provided it is a 1A (amp) fast blow glass fuse.

Before replacing check the power line to make sure there is no short in it. Also if the cigarette lighter end gets wet it could blow.

Replace fuse

As stated by goalie39, the fuse is located in the tip of the cigarette lighter power supply cord.
Twist off the tip.
The fuse is rated at 2A/256v

My gps wont tern on

It's very possible that the fuse blew out when the power wire overheated. Check the fuse in the car for the cigarette lighter and see if it is out. Most cars will come with a set of fuses that you can use to replace the blown one. How to tell if it is blown - look at the fuse in good light. If you see the wire filament is broken, the fuse is shot. Just replace it and see if your TomTom will work again.

Fuse blue in the car adapter and at the same time garmin 300 nuvi went dead and wont start up with either car power or battery power.

Blue fuses are usually 5 amps.
Red ones, 10.
Yellow, 20.

The fuse inside a cigarette adapter is usually a 1A, buss fuse - available from Radio Shack or "The Source By Circuit City".

If your blue fuse blew, then visit your nearest department store, and purchase a new fuse. Buy a box of 5 or so just in case.

Installation / wiring

Yes, you can do what you said above. The only issue I see is that you should still add an inline fuse between the GPS and the power source you will be connecting it to.** SEE NOTE BELOW **
The cigarette lighter plug has a fuse in it. Most of the fuses you have in the car start at 5 Amps and go up in value, like 10A, 20A, etc.

The problem is these values are way too high should the GPS have a catastrophic failure or the GPS power leads get pinched or shorted to ground. You'll burn up the GPS and its wiring before the auto fuse blows.

You need a low rated fuse (probably 1/4A) inline with the GPS. This will give you adequate protection. You can buy inline fuse cords at Radio Shack.

** NOTE **
Check to make sure that the DC output of the cigarette adapter is indeed +12VDC and not some lower voltage indicating that there is an internal regulator circuit. I took a look at the 660 owners manual and it says the GPS input voltage is +12VDC, so you should be ok. I also hear there is some electronics inside of the cigarette lighter plug. It may have to do with charging the internal GPS battery. You could always take apart the cigarette plug and remove the internal board and use it in your hard wiring to your vehicle.

Once you get it all working, you could duplicate what you built for another vehicle. You can buy the cigarette adapters online.

Please let me know if I can be of further assistance to you.

Good luck!

No power to unit, but powers on okay in house with AC power adapter

Not sure if you'll see this post, as you asked the question back in Nov, but I
thought I'd tell you what I know anyway.

I and my parents bought the same exact unit within a week of each other.
There's works, and mine does not.

I took their cradle, and hooked it to my GPS, and it came on, no problem.
I took my cradle, and hooked it to theirs, and boom, nothing.

So, with that, I was able to isolate that the problem is definitely in the cradle.

I went to the manufacturer website, registered my Magellan Roadmate 700,
and then I was able to contact customer support. I am writing to you as
I wait for their reply. Here's their website.

Hope this helps!

Tomtom troubleshooting

My daughter had this problem and it actually turned out to be the cigarette lighter connection. The fuse needed changing and bingo all working well now! Check you have a green light on the charger cable going into your cigarette lighter - if you dont its probably the fuse.
