I'm trying to update the video card in this model as well for my g/f. It's labeled an hp Compaq d530 CMT but it may have been slightly modified by the repair shop she bought it from late last year.
It has Windows XP Professional installed. Intel Pentium 4 Processor, 2.6GHz. 1GB of RAM but dual channel with the ability to upgrade to 4GB.
I'm not sure if they changed out the power supply in it. I've read people posting that it has a stock 185W power supply. This one says 240W max output on the sticker inside, no other numbers.. am I assume its the same.
I fully understand the better option is to upgrade this model but truth is she don't play enough and I'd rather spend 30 - 50 bucks rather than 400 for a new computer. We like to play Halo..WoW..FFVII.. games of that nature.
Any recommendations of 8x AGP cards to look for on Ebay. I have a Winfast Leadtek A250 LE 64MB (equiv. to Nvidia Ti 4200) card that I've all but given up on. If I uninstall the original graphics drivers within the control panel, an Intel(R) 82865, and shutdown.. then install my Ti 4200, all I get audible beeps when trying to boot up. If I leave the Intel driver installed, shutdown and install the Ti4200 card, it boots up fine, finds the new hardware and searches for drivers. Sometimes it finds the drivers on the CD, sometimes not.. and I've gone to Leadtek's website and downloaded their drivers... no matter what.. I get the following results. When I restart the computer Windows loads.. but when it trys to switch over to the User Welcome screen the screen just sits there black... everytime. I don't know if there is something I need to do in the BIOS or what. On Leadtek's website... along with the driver, they offer a BIOS update... but it will not run on my computer for some reason.
It's really frustrating.. because I don't know if its my card.. or the machine. Runs perfectly find again once I remove the Ti 4200. I see there have been a lot of posts about updating this particular model... can someone explain to me the proper way to try and install this Ti 4200 card.. including an explanation of what update I need to do on the BIOS.

- Thanks for the reply Savage... after I posted I realized this was a pay site. I also realized I posted a question about a year ago that no one ever responded too so I figured my time was in vein.
After posting, it was just on my brain and I had to try some more things. Before doing anything, I ran Windows update and let everything get caught up. The only thing I really noticed that pertained to it was an Intel Graphics card update so that probably didn't do anything for me with the new card.
However, based on my post above, I stuck to what worked. I left the Intel driver installed and powered the computer down. I installed the Winfast A250 LE card in the open AGP slot and powered the computer back up... leaving the side of the tower open to see that the fan on the card was turning and that there wasn't an extreme amount of heat.
Like before, it started up fine, and detected the new hardware. I put in the Winfast Graphics CD and tried to run the auto install for the driver. It gave me some sort of message saying it couldn't run it automatically but that I could go to the folder 2k/xp and install the driver from that location. I found the folder and a setup.exe file within it and just ran that and hoped for the best. (I had done this before just using an update from Leadtek's website)
The difference this time.. is that I also went and installed DirectX 10 AND.. after installing the driver from the CD.. I selected "No" to reboot and went right back to windows update. Under "Custom", it showed an Optional download and it was for the Nvidia Ti4200. I was still skeptical because I had also tried using an updated driver from Nvidia's website the night before with no luck.
But walaa, I finished that upgrade, restarted and sure enough.. it's working!! The funny part is I forgot just how minimal the Ti4200 really is..lol... compared to even the lowest factory installed cards now. But hey, started up Halo and didn't get an error message saying my card isn't good enough so I know it's working.
Even now I'm still leery... I'm giving the computer back to my g/f today and told her if she smells wierd burning or the computer beeps to just unplug it and call me. lmao
THANKS and if it doesn't work I'll keep that Radeon Series in mind... my 4 yr old laptop came with a 9700 Radeon and its great.Aug 27, 2009
- SO FOR ANYONE LOOKING TO UPGRADE THEIR HP D530 CMT (miniTower) Graphics Card...
My card was a Winfast Leadtek A250 LE 64MB card.
Researching it led me to find that it's a Ti 4200. (Apparently it only appeared once on the original manufacturers box and in very small print)
Some of the questions I saw in other posts...
1) Yes the CMT model has a functional 8x AGP slot
2) The power supply is only 185W with a 240W max but yes this card still runs fine
3) Yes the Ti 4200 described above (64MB) will work without any brackets
4) If your computer's odd like mine, you may need to leave your Intel graphics drivers installed, shutdown, and install the new card instead of removing them first like every manual will tell you or your computer may just beep, give a red light, and refuse to boot.
