This printer is basically brand new, I bought it in September, and it's sat on my desk safely since.
Yesterday I printed out a page fine, it grabbed the paper and printed out at lightning speed as usual. I'm a college student, I don't use the printer heavily, but I use it from time to time. Also, no one tampered with the printer since I don't live at school :-)
Today, it will not feed the paper no matter how many times I try. I've fanned the paper out, I've used everything from one sheet to many sheets, it just won't roll the paper through. And it's making a weird sound too, like a low grinding shrieking noise. While I don't know anything about printers, I know that's definitely not a good sign!
Luckily I discovered the lower paper try beneath where the printed paper comes out, so it's a temporary solution, especially around finals time.
Any ideas on what is wrong with this printer? Visually, I can't see anything stuck in there. As I said, it worked perfectly yesterday, no scary sounds either. I got it at Best Buy... I guess I might end up taking it there, I think they will fix it for free or send it away and I won't see it for a month... not so sure how to proceed... perhaps there is something I can do to fix it myself, like if the "rolly thing" that catches the should be in a certain position or something?
Hello again everyone -- I just figured out my problem and successfully fixed it! Very relieved.

The above solution is very detailed and informative. It's great. Thanks. Also, a good first step is to check the paper feed to make sure it is set to the correct loader. Sounds stupid but easily overlooked.

check first if printer work fine, you can test print it manually, then check if computer communicate with the printer by allowing to remove driver and insert usb cable it must be popup that found new hardware occurred for its detecting printer. reinstall back driver, restart and send print test.
After reading through earlier problem fixes, I inserted a piece of Card right through the feed system then taped all the covers and loose paper feed trays closed with masking tape.
Picked the whole unit up, turned it upside down and shook it up and down and side to side quite hard.
Put it back in place on the desk, undid all the tape and plugged both cable back in and switched it on. It went through a long startup process, spat out the card sheet and has worked OK since then (about 15 sheets printed).
Thanks for all the ideas in earlier fixes.
get some paper towels and boil some water put in in an old coffee cup. hold the ink cartridges over the water (not in) the steam will clean out the nozzles on the cartridges. the ink will run a lil bit (hence the paper towels) give the printing a go again.
First clean and align the printer correctly. You will need to ensure that you have selected Photo Glossy Paper for best results. You will also need to adjust the gamma settings and also play with the colour saturation controls to achieve a good colour balance that you are happy with. Try printing a basic colour additive chart and comparing screen against printout and adjusting settings as required. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AdditiveColor.svg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/6/67/20071203133356%21CIE1931simple.png Also have a look at myPANTONE colour splash to get the definitive Pantone Colour Mixes at http://www.pantone.com/pages/pantone/pantone.aspx?ca=24 or use a paint tool or PhotoShop etc to create solid colour blocks of basic colour to compare against.
I had a similar problem; paper would go sideways when it was trying to pull it through. I looked into the paper slot with a mirror and found a mini-blind clip had fallen into the printer. I tipped the printer over and shook it out and it worked fine.
Experienced the same problem a few months back with my new MP600 .. had to take it to an authorised repair centre where they replaced the print head .. all good since
yes, it is very likely an extra screw that was accidentally placed in the box at the factory just before shipping. I have come across this dilemna with other new, unopened things.
