Re: it keeps asking me to format the disk

I have many thumb (flash) drives,...all of which has asked for a format on at least one save them I've always used partitioning software to re-write the partiton...which has made the drives re-usable after every fatal occasion....I strongly suggest constantly backing them up...but if the flash drive ever states that you must format it....grab the partitioning software,,,partition it...and then enjoy it for a few more months before you're required to do it again...

Re: it keeps asking me to format the disk

If it cannot complete a format, you want to return it as a defective item, where you purchased it, for replacement.

You might need to double check to make sure this is made for a Mac, PC, or Both. You might need to have it formated from the Disk Management (assuming you are using a Windows computer) so your computer recognizes the hard drive.
Here is a link.
If this does not work then it is likely you have a faulty unit and should ask for a replacement.

Unable to read the Cruzer 8GB flash drive

Most likely then its a hardware issue with the drive, try the following:
1- Plug the USB key into the computer 2- Click Start 3- Right Click on Computer (Win7) or My Computer (XP) and select manage 4- Select Storage and then Disk Management
Here you should be able to see the drive and it will show if there is media or any type of partition on the drive. If it the USB key still shows up as a CD-ROM and you have tested on two computer its the key that is the issue and you would need to replace it

You must initialize first. OK plug it in, to to My Computer Icon, Right Click on it & and click MANAGE, window will open, RH side, now go down to Disk Management, click in that... Now find your drive and initialize it, Now you will be able to, if your drive is OK, Format, NTFS is best.

Usb is not responding when inserted into laptop (have tried another computer so fault must be in the flash drive)

Files on a flash drive can be corrupted if it is not removed from the USB port properly.
Before removing the flash drive click on the Safely Remove Hardware icon and then click on the flash drive you want to remove and then remove the flash drive when the computer message says it is Safe to remove.
To restore the flash drive you may need to format the flash drive, but you will lose the data stored on the flash drive.
If you need the data on the flash drive this program may help: -
Digital Photo Recovery

When the flash memory device appears to malfunction it maybe possible to restore it by reformatting it. Insert the flash drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Healthy.

You need to format the external drive. Format the drive as primary drive and in FAT32.
Insert the external hard drive into the USB port then Click on Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Computer Management - Disk Management.
Then right click on Disk 1 removable drive and click Format. After the flash drive has been formatted it will indicate that it is Health

My segate 300Gb HDD keeps asking to format it when i recently pluged it into a new computer to transfer data to and it said that the driver didnt install correctly. since then it keeps asking to forma

I'm assuming that this was functioning at one point. If you are using Windows, Right click on my computer and click "Manage" Then go to disk management? Does it see the drive at all. If so, has a letter been assigned? It is possible that the operating system will show the drive even if it can't read the data. Look to see what file system and how it sees the disk having been partitioned. It is possible that your partition table has been corrupted. This can possibly be fixed using a tool like disk doctor or fdisk.

If, on the other hand, the drive is also making funny noises, you may have a mechanical failure on the drive.

Seagate 750GB usb HDD asks to format, when opening by double click

The disk is either damaged or the USB interface is damaged.
1) You could try opening the external case and connect the disk to your computer directly (Using IDE/S-ATA cables)
2) Format the HD and use data recovery software/service.

Unable to access external WD 500 Gb drive: "You need to format the disk"

It seems vista is the problem. On older operating systems the disk's work fine. My dis was formatted with vista and as a result showed exactly the same message when plugging it into a xp system. Back on the vista it works fine. The ntfs is native to win NT/xp there might have been changes in vista. Also do not use the firewire cabling, i had numerious problems until i reverted back to the usb.

USB external hard drive driver

If you go into Computer Management and go to Storage > Disk Management. You'll see the partition there. Right click on it and assign it a drive letter. You will be able to access it from there.
