Brother MFC490 ist not printing on USB of my HP Compaq P$ home PC. it prints fine on my Vaio notebook ....both run XP Pro. I figure it must be a Hardware problem of the Comapq?

Yes it must be a problem with the compaq, BIOS setting, USB failure, or just a broken or bent connector, since the Brother doesn't care which computer you use.

for key span server to work with windows 7 install windows xp mode to windows 7 ( this can be downloaded from microsoft website if you have windows 7 pro and above. if you have windows 7 home then install windows virtual pc, start it up and insert a windows xp pro install disk. for info on this google 'workaround to install windows xp mode in windows 7 home premium and home basic') Once you have windows xp mode running, install the keyspan server utility int he virtual machine and setup as usuall. then share the printer. go to windows 7 devices and printers and add a printer, chose a network printer, select the new virtual machine and select the shared printer. In order for the printer to work just start up the keyspan program from windows 7 and print....your welcome.
Try connecting your printer directly to the wifi router/switch in a shared network configuration. Then go to your router settings, find the local ip address add this as the 'host'. Your settings should be as follows:

You will have to reconfigure your drivers on your pc as well. Mine installed as a wireless shared printer even though the printer is not wireless but I have it connected to my wifi switch for sharing and it worked fine.
I believe your suspicion of driver/Win7 problem is right on target. Many manufacturers have not created / updated hardware drivers to work under the new Windows 7 environment - which is much more security focused than past versions have been.
If the driver you downloaded from HP has not been tested and certified to work under Windows 7, then you have a slim chance of getting the printer to work correctly, if at all. If the driver has been tested and certified by HP, then I would file a trouble ticket with them, describing the problems exactly. You may have discovered a bug in their driver that they could not / did not test for.
My brother MFC490-CW is connected wirelessly to the router. It printed OK wirelessly yesterday when I set it up but today it will not print. The printer has a strong wireless connection to the router. My PC also has a strong connection to the router. But the printer seems to have lost the connection to my PC. How to I re-establish the wireless connection from the printer to my PC?
Scanning over network usually requires software to connect. First go to the drivers page as below.
Windows Vista | Windows XP, download the latest drivers (the Full Feature one) as well as the firmware update for the OfficeJet. Plus the "Update" files that's dated newer than the Drivers.
Upgrade the firmware (this will reset all custom settings in the OfficeJet like IP address) with a USB connection.
Run the full feature installer and if there is an option for Networked OfficeJet, then tick it. Also you may need to change/disable firewall for the installer to pick up the networked OfficeJet.
Scanning over the network usually connects with a customized TCP port. And most likely the Windows "Scanners and Cameras" will not pick up network scanners unless it's been defined manually (installer can do this part).
