Dryer is flashing AF I have no idea what it means

  • Anonymous Aug 02, 2008

While Im dyring my cloths it flashing "AF" i have no idea what it meens!

    Need help!

  • spneighbors Dec 28, 2008

We have the "AF" symbol come up at least once a month and the cause is the lint filter. Only 50% of the lint on the filter actually comes out with the filter and the bottom 50% falls back into the machine. It then eventually clogs up the exterior vent which I must clean out monthly. I have had a service tech look at it and they claim its a design flaw and that nothing can be done about it.

    Anyone else having this problem?

Same problem here, error code AF and after an hour the clothes are still damp.

My dryer has error code AF what is this and the clothes I have to keep drying at least 3 cycles.

  • Anonymous Feb 08, 2009

we had the same problem the af came on and now the dryer has power but does not work any suggestions?

  • bgraves58 May 03, 2009

we have a two year old cabrio dryer, and just recently the AF code is coming on, and the dryer is running and running, and not turning off. The washer mate that we purchased, which has a warranty, has had two motors put in because bra Stays, have gotten jammed in it. lots of money for crappy appliances.

The AF code was showing on my less than 2 year old dryer as well. The heating element was replaced last year and I subsequently had the duct cleaned to keep from that happening again. Today it was the belt had come off. The repairman fixed the belt but now it makes the most awful metal to metal sound you have ever heard when running. He said it was the seal and needed to re-glue and would be back next week. Any suggestions about the metal to metal screaching? The repair man said it was fine to run it, but that does not seem like th right answer.

I found the answer to the code AF also and it means the air flow is blocked. I checked my dryer vent on the outside and it was clear. However when I removed the dryer duct it was clogged just inside the machine. I had washed and dried a blanket that shed alot!

SOLUTION!... Blower pulley coming unscrewed

I was getting an AF code after 6 months of ownership and ended up making a service. The guy who came out fixed it on the spot, saying that it was a common problem with dryers of these type. Here what I learned:

If you've already verified that you are not experiencing blockage in your air vent and your lint trap is empty follow these instructions.

Remove the rear vent from the whatever external venting you have. Turn on the dryer and place your hand over the rear vent to feel for air flow. If there is very little air flow then chances are the pulley on your blower has come off. These are mounted on the rotor bolt of the blower and have a tendency to come unscrewed over time. To fix this you'll need to remove the front panel of your dryer, screw back on the pulley, and place the belt back on.

To take off the front panel, after unplugging the dryer, you'll need to first lift the top panel. To do this, there are two tabs under the lip of the top panel, one on the left and one on the right. You can use a flat head screw driver to push in the tab and lift the top panel, one side at a time. Lift the front of the top panel and rest it on the dryer control panel. Next remove the two screws, one on each side of the drum on the inside of the front panel. Now you can open your dryer front panel like a door. At this point you should be able to see if the pulley and belt have come off. If so, remove the lint screen and metal vent guide, and screw the pulley back on the blow rotor bolt. I suggest using some Loctite on the threading to keep this from happening again. Finally, place the belt back on the two pulleys, one on the motor and one on the blower. Reassemble your dryer, plug it in and verify you now have proper air flow out the rear vent.

You are THE MAN! You just saved me a couple hundred bucks and your step by step was spot on. I really owe you a BEER!

  • MattC Jan 16, 2013

Worked perfectly! I would add; when putting the belt back on, make sure that it doesn't rub the large tab on top of the fan housing. If the belt rubs the tab, I would expect a very short life for the belt.

  • MattC Jan 16, 2013

Worked perfectly! I would add; when putting the belt back on, make sure that you orient the belt so that it doesn't rub the vertical tab on the blower housing. If it rubs, I expect that the belt will tear up very quickly.

Yes, this was exactly the issue with my dryer. There's a little friction roller that goes over the drive shaft for the blower that screws on and off and it had indeed come off. I put on a few drops of breakfree in hopes that it will help prevent this from happening again anytime soon. Thanks.

I just had the same AF code on my 5 month old Whirlpool YWED7800XL. I found that the pulley that drives the fan had come off somehow therefore the fan was not being driven. I had to tilt the top panel out of the way, remove the front panels (only 2 screws) and the missing pulley was sitting in the bottom of the front panel. I reinstalled it and the belt (it only can go one way without damaging the belt) and I was done. Pretty easy repair. Also FYI everyone, underneath the electronic panel is a service manual for the dryer. Anyone who can understand what they are saying and if you have a multimeter, you can diagnose the entire machine yourself.

Thank you so much! This helped me so much. My belt and pulley fell off and I called a repair person and he said that I had to replace the parts because they broke. They were actuall at the bottom of the machine. We found the manual due to your post and found the belt and pulley in tact and put them back together.

I've been having the same problem, my husband took off the back panel and exposed the metal panel and unscrewed the top display and there was a paper with all error codes and how to take the dryer apart. Hope this is what everyones been waiting for.

How do you get the back panel off? We're having trouble doing this.

  • stroked401 Feb 21, 2011

To get to the sheet she is talking about the back panel doesnt have to come off. It is under the electric display panel. On the backside electric panel there is two phillips screws that need to be removed, then from the rear of the dryer push the panel forward slightly. This will unlock it and then the panel can be lifted upwards. The paper manual is then right there. To remove the back panel is very easy as well, there is a handful of screws holding it in place. Use a 1/4 socket on a ratchet and remove them, the panel then comes right off.

Yep, just cleaned out the vent on the outside of the house and no more AF. Thanks for the info - saved me some $$.

  • dianaglee74 Sep 19, 2011

I cleaned the outside vent and hose, but the AF indicator is still on. Is it possible there is a clog within the dryer itself? Where?

Diane if you call Whirlpool and let them know you have and F1 error code, they will send out a repair person free of charge. this is a quality issue and that part is now in RECALL. I called 1-800-253-1301 and told them I had that code. They immediately told me that this is a common issue and they set up service repair for me, no problem.

Well we figured out that the af code, is air flow, like it was mentioned on this sight. thanks. some how a bird decided to build a nest way up in the vent hose. a nest about nine inches long. totally packed up the hose.

I read the above comments and went outside and found the contractors had painted over the vent...so the slats were sticking together. I peeled off the paint. All better now!

Hey all, I had the same "Belt fell off" problem as mentioned above. Pretty easy fix. In my case the "nut" that held the bet onto the fan had come totally off and was just sitting there on the fan housing. Before checking the below to fix the AF (Air Flow) error issue be sure to check that your vent and vent pipes are clear since that is usually the problem and a easier fix.

Just pop the top with a putty knife by pressing on the two pressure pins on the left and right side between the front and top, use a pole to keep the top from falling back down as it is on hinges in the back, disconnect the wires on the right side that are for the door sensor, take out the two screws holding the front in place, lift the front housing straight up to clear the latches on the bottom and then forward and off, and look around at the bottom.

It also gave me a good chance to get it all cleaned out on the inside. Who knew that one dog could get so much hair in a dryer?

I have the same problem it stands for Air Filter witch is the lint catcher

Not only should you do the above comments, I removed the back panel, unscrewed the silver chute on the left hand side, pulled against it with slight pressure ( did not remove it as it is attached up through the top) and vacuumed the upper flange where the lint trap connects to and had to reach in from the bottom and grab the clog that was the size of a large kitten. Dries clothes like new now!

I have to take the connection off every 2 to 3 months and use a blower to blow the line out. Every time we do a gush of water comes out the vent on the outside of the house. Then it starts drying again. My dryer before this had no trouble drying clothes and pushing the water out. But this dryer doesn't have enough force and water settles in my line.

I hate this dryer... I would say my lint filter catches only about 33% of the lint.. the rest can be seen down inside the machine.

I wish Whirlpool would do a recall/redesign of the filter... this doesn't seem safe to have all this lint.

We thought for sure the vent was clean, checked outside and inside. Took the dryer apart only to find the blower worked fine. Used the vacuum cleaner as a blower and you would not believe what came out of the vent, both inside and out. What a mess! Cheaper than a repair call though.

Dryer not drying-the sceen has af flashing please help..whirlpool cabrio

An "AF" code means there is a low airflow condition and the clothes may not dry properly. To remedy this, check to make sure the lint screen is cleaned off and that there is no blockage in either the vent duct that runs from the dryer to the wall or the vent hood on the exterior of the house.

What does AF error mean on Cabrio electric dryer

AF on your Cabrio means the Air Flow is being obstructed. Make sure the vent is secure and free of debris at the back of the appliance. Also ensure there is no obstruction where it is vented outside of your home. Lastly, make sure the lint trap is clean. Your dryer will still run normally, but it's best to go through your checklist so no further issues arise.
