Standby light is on all the time but unit will not do anything at all. will not respond to remote and red light will not extinguish unless unit is unplugged??? Even after plugging power back in, the player remains frozen?
Mine did that too, twice. The second time I unplugged it from the power supply, plugged it back in and the stand by light did not come on anymore. I guess I have to replace both the power supply and the capacitor?
I have been struggling with the same problem and almost rebuilt the power supply before finding the solution. In my case it was a faulty capacitor-C4, next to the diode D4. Replacing C4 and the machine performed as new. I hope this helps. Cheers

The clock settings will only be retained if you power down the unit via the On/Off button on the remote or on the unit i.e. put the unit into standby mode. If you switch off mains power the clock settings are lost as there is no backup battery in the unit. Power consumption on standby is negligible.
i had the same problem with my sansui san0218-160 dvd recorder. i found the power supply board inside the case had failed, so i replaced two faulty capacitors on the power supply board and reassembled the recorder, it`s working like new again. hope this may be of some help.
