It will not play any kind of dvd when I try them. The dvdrw's are the ones that I have used all along. It worked fine yesterday then once again I came home today and wanted to watch my recorded program and it told me it had stopped recording because disc was full. I tried playing it and it said it was empty. The disc was empty when it was suppose to record in the first place. I have been getting it fixed but don't know how I did it. It takes me hours of just messing with the thing to get it to work then I don't have a clue what worked or how I did it.

I ended up unplugging everything for a few min. and started it back again. After that it worked and I have not had any problems again with it. Maybe it needed resetting or something.
To begin with it would not play any kind of dvd, movie or anything nor would it record. I tried all kinds.

Thanks for you suggestions

Sony DCR-DVD403 C 13:02 Error Message so won't record movies.

Place an empty disc in, format the disc, record a little scene. Turn off camcorder. Place the error disc in the camcorder, turn on the camcorder all the way to play/edit. If this doesn't work turn it to record and try to record. Worked for some of my error disc

Panasonic DMR-ES30V

I have three Panasonic DVD recorder/Vhs combos and I get the same problem from time to time...it may be the disks you are using.  Mine absolutely hate Sony disks.  I have the best luck with TDK or Maxell.  You also must clean your unit frequently, if you do alot of recording.  I use my units daily.

Hope this helps

SAMSUNG DVD R120 error EC:0207

I had exactly the same problem -- error message of "This disc can be neither played nor recorded. Please check the disk [EC:0207]" after the machine had been working fine for a year. I downloaded the latest firmware from the Samsung website, burned it to a CD-R disk (took three tries until the DVD Recorder recognized the disk -- worked when I used Rocio CD Creater software), then loaded the firmware updates to the DVD Recorder. On the Samsung website you can retrive the firmware update instructions as well. I had to perform the firmware upgrade several times until it successfully updated both the system firmware as well as the disk firmware. After successfully updating both, the Recorder now recognizes the DVD-R disks and I was able to resume recording. I have however, noted some choppiness with the playback of the newly recorded disks. Other than that, the firmware upgrade successfully resolved the problem.

sounds like you have a problem with the laser.laser has to focus a lot sharper to play dvd thus will play vcd but not dvd.Try cleaning first and if this doesnt work would suspect laser faulty,.
