Given the model of the router is known can you provide the manufacturer and model of the computer or wireless adapter if separate. Second step -- eliminate problems one step at a time. Do you have a computer with a known working network card that requires a wire? Use it with a wired connection to test if the router (the router has 4 ports for network wires on it) is working. If the Vista machine has a network card try it with a wire, too. Let me know if the router is working with a computer wired to it.

We will try additional steps after I get the answers to these.

I baught this belkin router at a yard sale, when I got it there was no disc to install it on my computer,I have hooked it up and it says I am connected but when I try to get on line it can't find the sever.

From what I can tell you are using Mozilla Firefox Try using Internet Explorer if ip address id not valid it will tell you Internet Explorer cannot display webpage In order to renew ip address these are the steps you will want to take:
1. Ensure the equipment is connected correctly(Ethernet cord from modem to Internet port on router
2.Open network connections Win XP:Start/Run/Type ncpa.cpl
Vista/Win 7 Start/search bar/type ncpa.cpl
3.This will bring you to your network connections window
4.If using XP: Double click on wireless connection and hit the support tab. Ensure it is assigned by DHCP and the ip address should start with 192.
5. If Vista Or Windows 7 Right click on wireless conenction and hit properties. Uncheck version Internet Protocol Version 6
6. Click and Highlight internet protocol Version 4 and hit properties
7. ensure that it shows obtain ip address and obtain a dns server automatically
8.After go to Command Prompt (Win XP) Start/Run/Type CMD
Windows7/Vista:Start Start/All Programs/Accessories/Right click on command prompt and hit run as administrator then hit continue type in these commands.
1.netsh int ip reset reset.log
2.netsh int ip delete arpcache
3.netsh winsock reset
4.ipconfig /flushdns
9. Restart Computer hope this helps please rate thank you

Internet connection problems

Troubleshooting Internet Connection Problems The purpose of this section is to give general tips
on troubleshooting your Internet Connection

While there are many possible configurations, I'll try and cover the most common ones.

Making Sure You Have Correct IP Information
Basic PING Tests
Browser Configuration

Making Sure You Have Correct IP Information 1. Make sure you have the correct IP scheme for your network. This would include the:
  • IP Address
  • Subnet Mask
  • Default Gateway
  • DNS Servers
2. There are a few ways you can see what IP addresses are being assigned.
But generally for:Win9x - Start / Run / command
Windows2000/XP/Vista - Start / Run / cmd
The run IPCONFIG /ALL. A sample where a router is used is in the following graphic.
ipconfig.jpg 3. IP Address:
If you have a router, common examples would be:
192.168.0.x, 192.168.1.x or 10.0.0.xIf you are directly connect to your DSL or Cable Modem, you should have an IP address that would correspond to something from your ISP.
What you don't want to have is something like 169.254.x.x. This means you are not getting and IP address assigned and needs to be resolved first.
4. Subnet Mask:
Also make sure you have the correct Subnet Mask. Most commonly this would be 5. Default Gateway:
Make sure you have the correct Default Gateway IP address.
With a router, this is typically the IP address of your router. 6. DNS Servers:
Make sure you have the correct DNS Servers. Sometimes this is the IP address of your router, so it would be the same as the Gateway IP.
Sometimes (as in this example), it is the actual DNS servers used by the ISP.
7. Possible causes for not getting an IP address assigned are:1. Defective cable, network card or port on the router. Make sure you are using all known working components.
2. Your router is not configured for DHCP (which would automatically be assigning IP addresses).
But you need to have this correct before proceeding.
Basic PING Tests 1. This and can be done from that same command prompt you used to run IPCONFIG 2. Try pinging the router's IP addresse.g. ping
If you get a reply, then your connection to the router is working.
If you don't get a reply, then you need to double check your network card, cable, port on the router. You might also see if any other computers on the network can do the same.
3. Try pinging an external site by IP address e.g. ping
If you get a reply, then you have a connection to the Internet.
If you don't get a reply, there are several things you can try:
1. Double check that the router is connecting to the Internet. Typically you can access the router through your web browser and check it's status.
2. Take the power off your DSL/Cable modem and Router. Plug the modem back in a wait a minute or so. Plug the router back in and wait a minute or so. Then restart your computer.
3. Winsock Fix - It is possible that the Winsock Registry entries have gotten corrupted. This is getting to be a more common problem. See WINSOCK FIX for clean ones you can download
4. Try pinging an external site by Namee.g. ping
If you get a reply, then you have a connection to the Internet and DNS is working
If you don't get a reply, there are several things you can try:
1. Double check your DNS entries
2. You many need to use the same DNS IP address that your ISP or Router is using.
3. On rare occasions your ISP has problems with their DNS servers. But that is rare in comparison to misconfigured computers.
If your PING tests work but you are having problems browsing sites on the Internet 1. If you could ping external sites by both IP address and Name, but cannot browse the web, likely your web browser is misconfigured. 2. Double check that you don't have an incorrect or not needed Proxy server assigned. For the Internet Explorer - Tools / Internet Options / Connections tab / LAN settings button. Uncheck both Automatically detect settings and Use a proxy server for your LAN.

Do you have a computer with wireless connectivity?
if yes then there is something that u should try first/
Enable internet connection sharing on that computer and connect it via ethernet cable to your xbox
and assing the ip address manually, the default gateway would be the ip address of the computer
if you are able to connect via this method then you need to speak to your ISP

Can't connect with network

if u dont hav e a router that is ur problem. to get ur xbox 360 to connect to vista media center you cannot connect an ethernet cord directly to ur 360, u must have ur computer hooked to a router with one ethernet cord and a whole different ethernet cord connecting to the same router the computers hooked up to. after you do that go to ur vista media center, turn active sharing on, make sure your router is connected to the internet. then go to ur xbox 360 and follow the on screen instruction from the the connect to media center screen.
if your wanting to connect to xbox live and stuff like that, and u enter ur ip address and security information and it tells u that the ip adress u entered is already in use by another device, and that ur xbox 360 needs to be assigned one, do this: simply go to were u put in ur ip address and set it to get the address automaticly (or in other words choose automatic). then go to test connection (ur router should automaticly assign ur xbox 360 an ip address) and ur router should connect to the internet. if it connects to the internet but not xbox live then u have not yet sign up for an xbox live account.

by the way when u make an xbox live account please send me a friend request. my xboxc live account name is: ghdude22

glad i could help!!! :3

Wireless shows connection, but will not connect.

This kind of problem occur due to dhcp disable in the wireless router for the security purpose. So try to give the ip adress manually by right clicking on the wireless and give the ip adress of the same range in which your network in working e.g is the range of your ip addresses so please select the ip which is not been used by any other computer and than in default gateway enter the ip address of you wireless router and you will be able to access the internet on your system.

When your laptop is working, check the ip address.
Open your DOS PROMPT, type iconfig then click enter. If your ip address on the laptop is 192.168.x.x, that means that you are getting your internet from the router. If your ip address is (just an example:68.x.x.x, that means that the router is not functioning properly.

If the laptop ip is 68.x.x.x(just an example), make sure that your comcast modem is connected to the INTERNET PORT of your router.

You just bought your router so the best way to deal with this problem is call Dlink tech support so they can walk you thru the router configuration.

as long as you are not using your own router to connect to your neighbours, as this wont work only one router on the network can connect to the net Im assuming your pc is trying to connect to the neighbours router, so you need to reset the router if you cant access it, it should have no password as default and the ip address of the router should be get into your network cards properties and ensure obtain an ip address automatically on the TCP/IP line is selected. Go into the router settings and make sure enable DHCP is set to allocate ip addresses automatically and that the router transmits on mixed mode b and G, turn off any wep or wpa encryption until you have a connection. Do not use windows connection repair as it will totaly mess up your pc's ip addresses and stop you from connecting to the routers ip address.
