I clicked on the answer that was colsest to what my machine was doing. I didn't know I could list my problem exactly. So no, it doesn't answer my question. My PAV 2300 stopped spinning, and now won't do anything.

    Paul,
the problem is not with the belts. The machine first stopped spinning, and now won't do anything. As I stated in another email she said there was a high pitched squealing sound. I am not a washing machine mechanic, but I'm guessing it's the bearings and not the transmission. I asked specifically if there was a grinding sound, and they said no.. If it is the bearings, are they pressed on, and is it easy to damage other parts during a change?
    Thank you,
    Harold M. Hawley

I just realized the belts could be squealing instead of a bearing. Since it won't turn anymore, and I didn't hear the sound, it could be anything. I turned the basket, which was not easy to turn and it made no sound and felt smooth. I'm guessing that is the belts were really worn it would slip some when I tried to turn it.

Hi the problem will be the belt has become streched dont keep trying to use the machine as this will cause the motor to fail usually it is the back of the machine that will need to come off once this is off you will see how the belt comes off it is really easy to do and most people who can use spanners can do this with no problem.
I would say it is the back that comes off the best thing to do is take the belt off and take it to repair shop so they can order you the correct belt.
Make sure you get the correct make and model number as their are several different belts for this make of washer.
Let me know if you need anymore help ill be glad to help

Hi if it was the bearings that had gone you wouldnt be able to move the drum if you can turn the drum it wont be that easy to turn but should yurn if it does turn then you will find the problem is deffinately the blet needs replacing.

These can be brought for next to nothing and should be relitively easily to replace

The drive motor which spins the drum is connected to the drum by a rubber belt. Sounds like the belt is burned through. Make sure you can spin the inside tub by hand to verify that the tub can turn freely before you replace the belt. The hum is from the drive motor just spinning freely.

My MAYTAG top loader WASHER FILLS WITH WATER ,BUT IT DOES NOT AGITATE OR SPIN.IT SMELLS AS IF RUBBER IS BURNING,ALSO DOES IT HAVE A BELT OR? PLEASE HELP .

You have a belt issue. The belt probably needs to be replaced. This is not a huge job, but it does take some know how. If you get a belt, turn the washer on its side, there should be a belt diagram on how to route it. If not, then you will have to draw a diagram of how it is on there and put the new one on. You can also get the diagram online if you run into any issues.

My washer wont spin or agitate and there was a burning smell

Hi
Older top load washers use a belt to drive to transfer the energy from motor to drum. However, if the belt slips, stretches, or breaks, it can cause friction and a burning smell, most likely a burning "rubber" smell. The belt is located either from the back access panel or from the underside of the washer. The solution is to replace the belt with a new one. To replace the belt you can open the back lid of the washer
To replace the belt carefully pry up on front washer top to release plastic keeper pins, remove 2 Phillips screws from beneath lower front washer panel, slightly lift upward on panel to release. Now remove old broken belt, push new belt beneath large tub pulley and put belt on small motor pulley. After this push back belt tension /idler arm, start belt on large tub pulley, turn tub pulley by hand to run belt on, release tension on idler arm. Replace front panel and lower top.
Hope this helps... Please post back if you need more information.

I was washing wool that has a lot of lint and the washing machine stopped spinning and smelled like hot rubber. Is there a filter to clean in the washer?

The burning rubber smell is probably the belt. It is probably broken into. Remove the front of the washer on a top loader to access the belt at the bottom where the motor is.

My washing machine will not spin...

As you don't give the model, I can just give a generic reply.
Most front loaders are belt driven, and some top loaders are.
I think the main thing to look at first is the connection of the drive motor to the tub. If this is a belt - replace it and check the tensioner.
If it is a top loader using a gearbox, then the motor is likely to need either brushes or a new capacitor. Both items should be checked - so -
Belt ok? - Y= go to next question / N = Replace belt
Brushes ok Y= go to next question / N =Replace
Replace Motor Run Capacitor.

My matag washing machine will spin but not agitate

It doesn't agitate If your washer doesn't agitate, check these: Lid switch Motor coupler Belts Clutch Drive motor Drive pulleys Transmission Agitator Lid switch If the lid switch is defective, the washing machine may not agitate or function at all. The switch is inside the washing machine main housing near the door frame. Often you have to raise or open the top or front of the washing machine to get to the switch. If it's defective, you need to replace it. Motor coupler Many washers produced by Whirlpool® use a small, relatively inexpensive motor coupling. It's plastic and rubber and is mounted to the shaft of the motor on one side, and to the transmission on the other. Over time, the coupler wears out and fails. If this happens, you need to completely replace it. Belts Many washing machines have one or two belts. If a belt is broken or badly worn, you need to replace it with a genuine belt from the manufacturer. (Some washing machine belts are designed with special characteristics not found in automotive belts.) Clutch If your washer was made by GE®, it may use a clutch for agitating the clothes. As the clutch wears out, it may prevent the washer from agitating well or at all. If the clutch is worn, you need to replace it. For this job, you probably want to hire a qualified appliance repair technician. Drive motor Many washer brands use a reversing motor. For agitation the motor runs in one direction, for spinning and draining, the other. It's possible for a motor to burn out in one direction and continue to operate in the other. If this happens, you need to replace the entire motor. Drive pulleys The motor or transmission drive pulley may be worn and unable to turn the drive belt. If so, replace the pulley.

Whirlpool top loader won't spin

If you are lucky you need a set of clutches about $45. If you are unlucky you would need a transmission.

Since it spins after you help it, I am guessing clutches.
