Olympus Stylus 770SW error message

While snorkelling, my Stylus 770SW started flashing an error message:
"Card Cover Open" and then "please check card cover".

The card cover is not open. Neither is the USB cover. There was no water inside either compartment, totally dry.. Changing batteries doesnt do anything. Manual is no help.It almost seems intermittent at times.

Any ideas?

After reading that, I realized that there's no way Olympus could cover the camera under warranty if it's got moisture in it. Even though it was their seals that leaked. Basically, they have no control over how the owner maintains the rubber seals.

But basically, this is not a good design for an underwater camera. It has too many places to leak. It's just a matter of time.

To be honest, I don't much like the camera anyway. The telephoto is useless. I have not managed to get a single good shot with it yet. There's no way to lock it into infinity focus mode. It's no good in low-light situations, either. And that "My Favorite is Empty" function is annoying. I did not buy this camera as a favorite photos storage and display device. The lack of a viewfinder is a mistake. It's a "point and pray" camera.

I am going back to Sony's. I have four digital Sonys and they have all been great. I only bought the Stylus 770 because I boat and fish a lot, and the supposedly rugged and waterproof design appealed to me.

After reading the post about warranty, I figured I had nothing to lose, and I opened the two covers, removed battery and memory card, put it on a plate in the oven at 170 deg. with the oven door cracked open for about three hours. Took it out, let it cool, and now it's working again. But I don't think I will take it underwater any more. A shame, I got some good photos of a shipwreck site yesterday before it started misbehaving.

have been using the camera above and below water for several months. Took picture just after xmas and downloaded them ok. Next day with a fully charged battery went down to the beach and camera would not start.
When I pulled batter out there was water on it. Cannot start camera. Interestingly the manual indicates that water within the battery cavity is not abnormal (p62 'Important information about water and shock resistance under the 'After Use' section).
Service centre is closed for xmas New Year, but I'm not looking forward to the service call.

During my August vacation I went to Dubai and used the camera at the beach and took it underwater, we messed around with the camera in the pool, at water parks, and it was OK. Yesterday I took it underwater with my friend in a pool and it turned off. I figured the battery was empty because it was running low ... we charged it for about half an hour and took it back and it kept turning off and on ... Then sometimes the screen wouldn't turn on but it would take pictures, or the entire camera would only turn on if I held it sideways, implying there was water somewhere inside. I don't understand, I took a basic underwater video, nothing crazy, and it got messed up? In Dubai we messed with it so much and nothing happened.

After only 15 days mine did the same thing. I called the dealer Olympus and they gave me a RAN number and told me where to send it. I got a call about a week later. They said because the camera had moisture inside I was not coverd. The best they would do is mail me a rebate card for 25 dollars off my next purchase. I was like WTF. The woman said sorry but that was all they could do. When I asked to speak to manager she hung up.

Hi!

You need to make sure that the memory card is correctly installed on the camera and that its door lock is closed.

Card cover open error message...

The problem you are describing is a problem with the sensor on the card cover door It seems to have failed and needs to be replaced. Following are the instructions to send your camera to Olympus for service. http://olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/cpg_servicerepair.asp Olympus will charge a flat rate repair fee for this product if beyond the one year factory warranty or the warranty is voided. The cost is $101.85 plus your local sales tax. This covers parts and labor, factory cleaning and diagnostic check, 6 month warranty and the cost of shipping the product back to you is all included in that price.

Information

Hey bella143,
The length of the video you can record is not determined by the camera it is determined by the size of the memory card you use. This camera comes with a 512mb memory card, and this camera should be able to record about 45 minutes of video on a 1gb card which should be about 22 minutes of video on a 512mb card. This of course is assuming your memory card is empty. I hope this helps.

Sincerely,
Allan

CARD ERROR ON OLYMPUS 710 STYLUS

I repeatedly removed, ref-formatted and replaced the card.  I did this 3-4 times and, while the battery did run down rather quickly, the card error problem seemed to be resolved.

I took some sample pics, download to comptuter, replaced card in camera and was delighted to find them still visible, and no card error message came up.

I hope this is a permanent solution.... and will have to check again when I have a chance to download again.

"Card-cover open" error message

It's when putting the card in.. typically you put it in and it clicks (so to speak).. if you delay removing your finger-push, it does something to the card and makes a Disconnect, although in looking at it, it looks just fine.. and the cover closes... A lot of people are reporting 'door open' errors. The micro-switch in the door housing is quite sensitive and pressure shifts from your hand on the door can cause it to trigger as if the door were opened. some get progressively worse. One fix is to add a little bit of length to the plastic that contacts the switch, either a layer of tape or a drop of epoxy, etc. This may help (or may not if the switch itself is flaky). Another fix discussed bypassing the switch altogether, obviously not for the faint of heart (or cameras in warrantee).
