Dishwasher won't empty all the water at the end of the cycles. Part of the water is draining as I can watch it in the disposal, but about an inch remains.

I understand your Electrolux dishwasher, model# EIDW5905JS, will not completely drain at the end of the cycle. It is not normal for water to remain in the bottom of the tub at the end of a cycle. If water remains in the bottom of the tub at the end of a cycle, the dishwasher may not be draining properly. Please follow these troubleshooting tips:

1)If unit is hooked up to a garbage disposal, make sure the disposer is empty.

2)If unit is hooked up to a new food waste disposer, check to see if the "knockout" plug located inside the disposal inlet has been removed.

3)Check to see if drain hose is kinked.

4)Make sure cycle is complete, not in a pause.

Belt, Water Pump Although few dishwashers have a water pump belt, if the dishwasher won't drain there might be a worn or broken water pump belt. After removing the lower kick panel the motor can be seen in the front, the water pump belt is on the bottom of the motor.

Drain Pump If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain pump might be defective. Test the pump motor with an Ohm meter. Drain pumps are not repairable, if it's defective it will need to be replaced.

Drain Impeller The drain impeller is attached to the pump and pushes the water out of the dishwasher, through the drain tube and into the garbage disposer or drain line. If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain impeller might be broken or worn out. Replace both the impeller and seal at the same time.

Drain Solenoid Kit If the dishwasher won't drain, the drain solenoid kit might need to be replaced. The drain solenoid is an actuator that opens a flap to allow the water to drain.
Drain Valve The drain valve can get clogged with debris and should be cleaned out if the dishwasher won't drain. If it seems clear of debris but won't actuate, it will need to be replaced. Your dishwasher drains into the garbage disposal. It you tried to use a plunger to clear your clogged sink or run the disposal with to much junk in it you may have force debris into the dishwasher drain hose. With both the dishwasher and garbage disposal disconnect from power disconnect the dishwasher drain hose from the garbage disposal. This is usually about a one inch black hose. Clear out any debris in the hose and inlet nipple on the garbage disposal. If debris is compacted far down the hose it will need to be disconnected from the dishwasher end and remove to clear the blockage.

Check for blockages in the base of the dishwasher under filter etc.
Also make sure the kitchen drain is clear and if you have garbage disposer run it prior to running the dishwasher.

Also need to confirm if the dishwasher pump is actually operating during the drain cycle. If the pump is faulty then it will not drain. Provide full model number of dishwasher if you need further assessment of the problem. Good luck.

No it isn't normal their shouldn't be any visable water in the tub at the end. You can firstly check filter by removing lower rack and unscrew the filter asm. espically the round basket for blockage,if that is clear reinstall it and check your disposer that the drain hose connects to in most cases for blockage, if sink drains normally the disposer is ok. If you have one check air gap on sink for debris in it,it's a chrome(most of the time and in some cases a different color) cap that sits up about 2 inches somewhere on the sink. While it deals with a different brand i have included a youtube video that will show you how to check air gap.

It sounds like an issue with the sink drain rather than the dishwasher. Many dishwashers are connected to a double sink, one bay of which contains a garbage disposal. If yours is connected in that configuration, run the disposal to clear any food debris that may still be present while running the HOT water into the disposal.

If you have no disposal or if the dishwasher is connected to the other non-disposal bay, check the sink drain again for proper drainage.

The easiest way to do this is to put a plug in the drain (both sides, one at a time), then fill the sink about half way with luke warm water. Then reach in and pull the plug from each side, watching to see how each side drains, but especially the side with the dishwasher connected. If it's slow draining, focus your efforts on clearing the drain on that particlular side of the sink. Try a plunger first before resorting to other methods to clear the sink. If you plunge the dishwasher side, get underneath the sink and pinch off the discharge line from the dishwasher if possible. A pair of vise grips works well, but don't overtighten them.

Some dishwashers have a soft disposal that can eject enough ground up particles into a sink to cause plugging up over time, especially if the dishwasher empties into the disposal side.

Greg, if the model number ends in GO1, your dishwasher has a piston nut assy. thats problably giving you the grief. If this assy. goes bad you will have water left in the tub at the end of the wash. A common GE problem. It's located under the filter screen in the back and just unscrews out. Part number is wd24x199. It's an easy fix. Look up the part on the net to get an idea of what it looks like. Catriver..post back.
